WooCommerce Product Image Indexing

For WooCommerce product image I want to take advantage of Google Image search, so I have optimized my images
with alt text, captions, keyword titles, image name, etc..
I also want the actual image url/link to redirect to the product(s) they are attached to when the images show up in the serps.
I have set “Redirect all attachment page URLs to the post they appear in.”

However, I see that images are set to No Index by default.
    That seems counter-intuitive.
Is there a setting to set all images to Index and keep the redirection to the page/post/custom post type they are attached to?

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for getting in touch with us.

They (attachments) are noindex because you don’t want Google to index them. Having the image attachments redirect to the parent is the correct option to choose.

Images, the actual images, can’t be set as noindex because you can’t add a robots tag to .jpg, png images. You just can’t.

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

    Thanks for the reply.

When someone does an image search on Google, and images show up in the serps, aren’t those the images?
What is in the index, the images or the page they are attached to?
    Aren’t those images indexed?
If not, then what is the purpose of adding alt text, descriptions and other meta data to images?

    Hi Mark,

    Thanks for the follow up.

The purpose of adding the ALT tags is to ensure that these images rank for a particular keyword.
In your use case, you can head over to Rank Math > Titles & Meta > Attachments and ensure that the robots meta are set to default to ensure that all the images in your content are indexed.

    I hope this helps 🙂

Maybe I’m confused on the words.

Are the “attachments” the images, or the pages the images are “attached” to?

    I get it now.

The difference is the images on the product pages vs. images as standalone pages. Noindex would apply to those standalone “attachment” pages.
The images themselves are indexed in Google, but not the media attachment pages.
The metadata of the images adds to the content of the page where they reside.

    Thanks
