This will entirely depend on you. Please note that 404 are pages that search engines cannot locate so you either show a 404 error page or redirect it to something relevant.
If the original page URL no longer exists and there are no relevant topics you can redirect it to, then a 404 page is your option here.
Now, if you believe that redirecting it to your homepage will give benefits to your reader, then it is also fine that way.
