    Hello,

I am new to Rank Math and might upgrade soon. I am getting the basics down but in my 404 monitor page I am seeing lots of php pages and other weird items. These include:

    elfinder/connectors/php/connector.php
    accesson.php
    old-index.php
    wp_wrong_datlib.php
    moduless.php
    admin.php

Heck I am even seeing items that start with blob like blob:https:/thechaoticcraftroom.com/1321e9be-268e-42bf-bc6f-37d69ca361d9

Is this normal behavior? I switched to advance mode and it looks like these are coming from bots. If someone could point me in the right direction or give any advice as to why I am seeing these or how to fix this I would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

Please note that we only report the 404s. We do not have information on how or why they are generated. Since you already enabled the Advanced 404, that will give you more information like referrer and user-agent. You can use that information to track down the source or find out if it is just bots generating those errors.

You can also fix these errors by redirecting them to a related page on your website:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/fix-404-errors/

Or, you can add them to the exclusion list at WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > General Settings > 404 Monitor > Exclude Paths.

    I hope that helps.

    Thank you.

    Reinelle,

Thank you for the response. When I turned on the advance feature of the 404 monitor I I was able to see that these are all from bots. Is this normal behavior for these errors to show when bots are crawling a website?

    Hello,

If bots are crawling the URLs that no longer exist then it will be logged as a 404 error in the 404 monitor. This is normal behavior.

Hope this clarifies your doubts. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch in case you need any other assistance.

    Jaideep,

Thank you for the information. I think there is some confusion here. For my normal products and blogs I get there being a 404 error. But and I just checked I got a 404 error log for

    site/wp-admin/install.php
    backup/wp-admin/install.php
    web/wp-admin/install.php
    cms/wp-admin/install.php
    test/wp-admin/install.php
    old/wp-admin/install.php

and many more like it. Honestly I do not know what these files are as they are not pages I created or anything. Does a crawler not only look at the webpages but every file in the back end? Where are these file located, why would a crawler being looking at them?

    Hello,

There might be a bot that is trying to access the files in the root directory of your site and since it isn’t there, you are seeing a 404 error. We can’t tell why it is trying to access those files but ff you are concerned then you can use a firewall plugin to stop bots from accessing your site.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you need any other assistance.

    Thanks.
