WebP in Sitemap

    Hi there,

I’m troubleshooting a situation in which the images in my sitemap are to “.jpg”, but where they should end in “.jpg.webp”. So effectively they’re linking to images that are not in my posts.

I use Imagify for webp creation.

The .jpg files are visible, but they’re not being indexed (my site is 9 months old, but is a 301 redirect of a site that was 2 years old).

(Actually, to be honest, I just don’t know why I don’t get the vast majority of my images in google images search results any more. I used to get loads; now I just get a bunch of random things. This is me stabbing in the dark.)

Anyway, is there any way to include .webp in the sitemap?

    Dana

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting the support and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

    About the image issue
Imagify even though it creates physical .webp file but it doesn’t changes the URL of the image where it’s been added. If you look into the source code of the page, it still links to jpg / jpeg / png image. Imagify didn’t made any changes to the HTML group. That’s why you still see .jpg into sitemap. I would suggest, try adding webp image in a post and check the sitemap. Please check sensitive section for the reference image.

    About image not getting indexed
Please verify you have optimized your website and images for indexing as in the following guide: https://rankmath.com/blog/image-seo/. If you have followed all the steps for optimum image SEO, please check your Google Search Console index coverage report for any issues that might prevent indexing: https://search.google.com/search-console/index

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.

    Thank you
