Updating domain 301 redirects

    Hi there,

I’m updating my domain (from a .net to a .com I purchased). I have a bunch of old redirects inside RankMath, using the redirection tool, for various internal URLs.

At a minimum, I know I need to ask my engineer to update the Destination URL for all redirects to mydomain.com. Do I have to ask for anything else to be updatd?

I want to avoid excessive redirects. I’m concerned that an old link to mydomain.net/old-url/ shouldn’t have to redirect to mydomain.com/old-url/ (server-side redirect) then to mydomain.com/new-url/ (Rank Math redirect).

How would you minimise redirects when changing domain?

    Thanks!

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting the support.

After updating the destination URLs, we suggest you check the redirections to ensure that they’re working correctly. You should also look for any domain-level rules in your htaccess file and if there are, you should update them to the new one.

As for the redirects, when changing the domain, we suggest implementing server-level redirections to the new one and carrying over the old redirections in place so that traffic coming to the old URLs/domain is directed to the desired pages on the new domain.

When you have further redirections in place in Rank Math, the source URL accessed on the old domain will be redirected twice as for normal URLs, you just need a single redirection from .net to .com, but for further redirections, the second redirection will take effect.

Unfortunately, there is no way other than manually redirecting each old redirected URL to the desired URL in the new domain, which might not be feasible as this way you’ll need to carry both domains.

Hope this helps clarify the situation.

    Thank you.
