Unindex Unique Products after sale

Hello, our client sells 2nd hand electronic products via their online store (or at least they will when we launch the new website).

They get 2nd hand MacBooks for example, refurbish them and sell them online. We want to index new products as they get uploaded onto the website. Then when the product is sold we want it to be unindexed from google.

The reason for removing them from the serps is each product is unique as one may have scratch marks, another may have a generic part replaced etc, so once the product has been sold, it will never be available again for purchase.

Is there a way to ensure this happens automatically?

    Please advise.

  • Hello,

Unfortunately, we do not have a dynamic way of setting the no-index option when your products are out of stock. However, in Rank Math PRO you can noindex hidden products, assuming they are out of stock:
    Out of Stock Product

This option will help your products be set to noindex and hence not be included in the sitemap. The noindex for hidden products option does apply if you do not want the hidden product page to be included in SERPs.

I hope that helps. Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you need further assistance with anything else.

Thanks Jeremy, this does not help all that much but I undertsand what I am looking for is quite specific… I am trying to brainstorm some ideas, would it be possible to set up some sort of trigger(of course this would be something we would create), eg when a product is sold, change the database value for indexing the specific product from a 1 to a 0..? (E.g Yoast has a table for indexing and the values are just 1 or 0).

    Hello,

    Sorry for the unfortunate delay.

We do not store the robots meta value in the format of 0 and 1, rather, we create meta_key and meta_value pairs for the robots meta. This is created under the wp_postmeta table.

Unfortunately, since we do not have a function like that, we’re unable to help you in this regard.

If there’s anything else that we can assist you with, please let us know.

    Thank you.
