The SEO description disappears after saving but reappears when editing.

After entering and saving the SEO description in the Snippet editor, the text disappears from the field. However, upon clicking “Edit” again, the description reappears, indicating the data is not lost. The counting of points, though, is affected. This behavior seems to be causing an issue with Google search results, as the displayed description does not match what was entered in the plugin.

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the SEO description disappearing after saving. This can sometimes happen due to a few common reasons:

    1. Plugin Conflicts

There may be conflicts with other plugins that could be causing this behavior. We recommend checking for plugin conflicts by following our guide on plugin conflict.

    2. JavaScript-Related Errors

JavaScript errors can also lead to issues with saving data. You can diagnose these errors by checking the JavaScript Console in your browser. For Chrome, you can open the console by navigating to More Tools → Developer Tools and then clicking on the Console tab. Here’s how it looks:

    Open Developer Tools

If you find any errors, they may provide insight into what is causing the issue.

    3. Meta Description Generation

If you have not set a custom meta description, Rank Math may be auto-generating one based on your content. If the focus keyword is not found in the first paragraph or excerpt, it might not display as expected. To ensure your custom description is used, make sure to set it in the Snippet editor and check that it includes your focus keyword within the first 120-160 characters.

If you continue to experience this issue after troubleshooting, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further.

Thank you for bringing this concern to our attention!

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Can you please confirm if you’re facing this issue on your Custom Post Type? If so, please note that our plugin shows the description in the preview only when the post type has editor support. You are facing this issue because it seems like your CPT doesn’t have editor support and that’s why the preview is not working properly.

To fix the preview, you will have to enable the editor support from the post type settings of that plugin.

Regarding the meta description on Google, nowadays, Google does that very commonly. Even when everything is fine, Google may choose to display a different meta description or no description for your search query result. Google may skip the custom metadata you have set and instead display something from the page’s content that better matches the search intent.

Hope that helps and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.

Thank you for your answer! We’ve also considered the editor as a potential cause. Do you think the problems with snippets in our custom posts are related to the discrepancies in Google search results, or could they be separate issues?

Could you also specify what we need to include in the theme regarding Custom Post for it to support the editor if this is possible?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello,

No, the slight bug snippet preview you see from the dashboard doesn’t affect the SERP at all. As long as the meta description is saved (as you have mentioned it does), and successfully generated on the frontend like so:

    Rank Math support

Lastly, if you are using a standard CPT plugin, you can enable the editor support in the CPT settings:

    Rank Math support

However, if you don’t have that settings, you’ll have to contact the developer or support of the plugin you used that handles that CPT.

    Hope that helps.

Okay, I understand! Since the source code shows the correct description, it seems the issue lies with Google. It’s frustrating, but I appreciate your help. Thank you!”
