Hello,
We apologize for the issue you are facing with the canonical tag on your pagination pages. This can sometimes happen if the canonical URLs are not set correctly in your SEO settings.
To fix this, you can follow these steps:
-
Check the Pagination Pages: First, ensure that the pagination pages are correctly set up in your WordPress site. You can do this by navigating to the Pages section of Google Search Console and checking the index status of your pagination pages.
-
Update the Canonical URL in Rank Math: If you are using Rank Math, you can update the canonical URL for each pagination page. Here’s how:
- Go to the specific pagination page in your WordPress dashboard.
- Scroll down to the Rank Math meta box (make sure you are in Advanced Mode).
- In the Advanced tab, you will find the Canonical URL field. Ensure that it points to the main page of your content, not to itself or another page.

-
Self-Referencing Canonical: If your pagination pages should be indexed separately, ensure that each pagination page has a self-referencing canonical tag pointing to itself. This is important for search engines to understand that these pages are distinct and should be indexed.
-
Test with Google Search Console: After making changes, use Google Search Console to inspect the URLs and check if the canonical tags are now appearing correctly.
If you continue to experience issues, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further. Thank you for raising this concern!
I’ve tried everything. I’m disabling the Rank Math SEO plugin and adding custom code, but pagination is working. Once I activate the plugin again, it stops working and only the main page appears.
Hello,
Rank Math adds the canonical to your URLs automatically if they are set to index.
In this case, please check this option in Rank Math > Titles & Meta > Misc Page > Noindex Subpages/Paginated Single Pages:
https://rankmath.com/kb/titles-and-meta/#noindex-archive-subpages
If those options are enabled, then your pagination will not have canonical URLs since they are set to noindex.
Looking forward to helping you.
