    Hi –

    I have Rank Math installed and am generally getting on well with it. However, I am a little unsure about the URLs.

    In WooCommerce, I have set the URL to show the full path, including categories and sub-categories. I have done this in order to achieve the “Mini Menu” at the top of each page allowing easy navigation back. (EG Home > Doggie Boat Shop > Healthy Treats > Meaty Sticks).

    This, of course, means I have very long URLs which Rank Math is rightfully complaining about!

    I see in SEO Settings that I can “Strip Category Base”. Learn more just takes me to a huge page where I can’t find any info about the effect of this.

    What I want to achieve is suitably short URLs without losing the important mini-menu at the top of the page, which site visitors find important and useful.

    Also, what effect will this have on links I have also posted on Social Media and Search Engine results if the original page changes? Does Rank Math automatically redirect?

    Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

    The strip category base option will basically remove the category names on the post URLs resulting in cleaner URLs and redirect them without causing 404 errors. You do not need to worry about any URLs that had been posted to social media and other sites.

    I have set this to on, but it doesn’t seem to have made any difference. I am still getting the full URL:

    Hi Alberto –

    I haven’t specifically installed a plugin cache, although I do get a reference to a cache on the plugins page from time to time. I have cleared that, but it still doesn’t seem to have made any difference. 🙁

    I don’t know if it helps, but when I navigate to categories, the “doggie-boat-shop” disappears from the URL, although this returns when I then click on a category.

    Hi Tim,

    I am afraid it doesn’t work for your single product listing which are controlled by your permalink settings at WP > Settings > Permalink.

    As per the example given on the settings page, your product category ARCHIVE links will change from /product-category/accessories/action-figures/

    to /accessories/action-figures/

    Archives are the pages that list your products. The URL in your example is not an archive, it is an individual product.

    So if you wish to make changes to your single product page (which we don’t recommend BTW), you will have to do that at WP > Settings > Permalinks. Though, you will then need to create a new redirect rule for every category on your website to correctly redirect them to the correct target URL post permalink change.
