Strange 404 error

In my 404 list I keep getting an error for my domain (just the domain url).

These seem to be generated by “facebookexternalhit”, but I’ve also seen it from mediavine.

My domain is obviously available (I have checked!). Do you have any idea why I keep getting 404 errors for my main URL?

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the 404 errors for your domain. It seems that the errors you are encountering may be related to how certain bots, like facebookexternalhit and others, are trying to access your main URL.

Here are a few potential reasons for this behavior:

    1. Misconfigured Server Settings: Your web server might not be configured correctly to handle requests from these bots, leading them to receive a 404 error instead of the expected content.

    2. Robots.txt Restrictions: Check your robots.txt file to ensure that it is not blocking these bots from accessing your main URL.

    3. Temporary Issues: Sometimes, temporary issues with your hosting provider or server can lead to these errors. It might be worth checking with them to see if there were any recent outages or misconfigurations.

    4. Caching Issues: If you have caching enabled on your site, it could be serving outdated content or errors. Clearing your cache might help resolve this.

To further investigate, we recommend checking your server logs for more details on the requests made by these bots. If the issue persists, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further.

Thank you for raising this concern!

How to Fix the Submitted URL Seems to Be a “Soft 404” Error » Rank Math

    Hello,

When you see your homepage URL in the 404 Monitor, it means that some bots are trying to access this URL: https://yourdomain.com/yourdomain.com.

This is because all of the 404 errors are relative to the homepage, so you can safely ignore those and go about your day.

If the error was on your homepage, you would see only a forward slash in the log /.

Hope that helps and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.

Oh I see. Okay that makes sense. So I could safely exclude these?

    Hello,

Yes, you can safely exclude them.
