Sitemaps

  • Hello,

I want to start this message by saying that I am very happy with using your plugin for my SEO and Google search console.
I am experiencing a problem with my indexation and sitemaps, somehow i constantly get to see pages and standard products when i look up my site that i have already put offline. These pages are default pages from the wordpress theme that dont have styling and copywriting etc. So if someone clicks this page it doesnt have anything to do with my site info (right now they will see a 404 page when they click on it because i have unpublished them). Of course i dont want these pages to show up in Google, but I cannot seem to find where i can make sure these pages wont be indexed or not be included in the sitemaps, so thats why i just temporarely delete them in Google search console, but this is not a permanent fix. Thats why i hope you are able to help me solve this issue, so i will remain with only having the right pages to show up when searching my site on Google.

    With kind regards,

    Fenne

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with your indexation and sitemaps. Thank you for your kind words about our plugin; we appreciate your support!

To prevent the pages you have unpublished from being indexed by Google, you can follow these steps:

    1. Set Pages to Noindex: You can mark the unpublished pages as "noindex" so that search engines do not index them. To do this, go to your WordPress dashboard, navigate to Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta → Global Meta, and enable the option for Noindex Empty Category and Tag Archives. This will help ensure that empty or unpublished pages are not indexed.

Noindex empty category and tag archives

    2. Remove from Sitemap: If you want to ensure that these pages are not included in your sitemap, make sure that they are set to "draft" or "private" in WordPress. Rank Math automatically excludes drafts and private posts from the sitemap.

    3. Check Robots.txt: Ensure that your robots.txt file does not have any rules that might be allowing these pages to be indexed. You can check this under Rank Math SEO → General Settings → robots.txt.

    4. Clear Cache: If you are using a caching plugin, make sure to clear your cache after making these changes to ensure that the updates take effect.

    5. Submit Updated Sitemap: After making these changes, submit your updated sitemap to Google Search Console again. You can find your sitemap at https://yourdomainname/sitemap_index.xml.
