Sitemap status “couldn’t fetch” in Google Search Console

    Hello there,

I have noticed that my sitemap’s status in Google Search Console has changed to “couldn’t fetch”.

This is a WordPress site. I re-saved the permalinks settings as advised in your documentation. After this action, the sitemap was indeed accessible again. But after resending the general sitemap (sitemap index) to GSC, it still received a “couldn’t fetch status”.

I read in some of your replies to questions that this might have to do with cloudflare caching the sitemap, so I excluded the sitemap index address from caching on cloudflare, and resent the address to GSC- still I/ receive the “couldn’t fetch” status. I am sending the sitemap’s address in the sensitive data area.

What might be the source of the problem?

    Many thanks!

  • Hello,

I’ve also checked your sitemap, and they are all redirecting to the final version.

In this case, please also try renaming the sitemap upon submission. You can follow the steps in this link:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/couldnt-fetch-error-google-search-console/#num-6-rename-the-sitemap-file

    I hope that helps.

    Thank you.

    Hello there,

I am sorry to say that this did not work as well; I have tried renaming the url, but the suggested pattern in the documentation (https://domain.com/?sitemap=1) actually led to my homepage; I have tried submitting it anyway to GSC (though it didn’t make much sense) but the error persisted, so after half a day I resubmitted the usual https://examplesite.com/sitemap_index.xml to the console.

The problem is still there… anything else that can be done?

    Many thanks for your patience,

    Clodie

    Hello,

I checked your sitemap variations and in two variations, there are dual 301 redirections applied. There should only be 1 301 redirection along with a 200 status.

Further, I tested the sitemaps as GoogleBot and it shows a timeout error.

Please have a look at the screenshots in the sensitive data section of this ticket.

Please get in touch with your web host and get both the above points checked.

Once done, please fully clear your website’s cache and any server-side caching applied and resubmit the sitemaps to see if the issue gets fixed.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.

Hello and many thanks for replying.

I have contacted my hosting service again and they point out the following:

    -GoogleBot can access the website- several successful requests were logged today (while any address of my site returns a timeout error on https://view.hugo-decoded.be/ );

-Making sure that there would be only one redirect form each varitaion to the https://examplesite.com/sitemap_index.xml variation entails changing the preferred address of the site to the https://www.examplesite.com variation, and I do not want to do that.

I really have no idea what to do next.

    Thanks again,

    Clodie

    Hello,

In that case, could you please follow the below steps?
    1. Temporarily disable Rank Math sitemaps from your WordPress admin area > Rank Math > Dashboard. https://i.rankmath.com/IPfHAX

    2. Install another XML sitemap plugin like XML Sitemaps: https://wordpress.org/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/

    3. Submit it to your Google Search Console account and see if the issue persists.

Please let us know how that goes.

    Thank you.

    Hello there,

I am happy to say that today my hosting service has found the way to redirect all the url variations to the preferred one without creating double redirections, and that after resubmission, the error in GSC is finally gone.

Many thanks for your patience and help,

    Clodie
