having the “couldn’t fetch” error in google search console and reveiwing the rankmath guide on this at:

it says the sitemap is to be in the root however mine is not and I’m not sure how to fix this since in wordpress on my rankmath plugin it shows the path:Your sitemap index can be found here: https://outdoorchamps.com/index.php/sitemap_index.xml
so not sure if the fact that it’s got the index.php in the path is the problem and if it is how do I fix this in rankmath and the wordpress structure.
by the way the tool you refer to in your guide shows https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/validate-xml-sitemap.html
does show my sitemap is 100% fine.
So why doesn’t google like it?

We checked and we can see that your Sitemap is accessible and working fine, here’s a screenshot:
That said, I doubt the index.php on the URL is the reason you’re getting that error, but you can remove the index.php from your URLs by navigating to WordPress Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks and removing the index.php from your permalink structure.
There’s also a possibility that your site was briefly unavailable when Google tried to access it. In this case, you can remove the sitemap from Google, wait a few minutes, add it back, and let us know if it works.
