  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the "Couldn’t fetch" error in Google Search Console regarding your sitemap. Thank you for providing detailed information about your situation.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

    1. Validate Your Sitemap

First, ensure that your sitemap is correctly configured. You can use the Validate XML Sitemap tool to check for any issues. If it returns a success message, your sitemap is likely set up correctly.

    2. Ensure the Sitemap is Located in the Root Folder

Make sure your sitemap is located in the root folder of your WordPress installation. The URL should look like this:

    https://rankmath.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Save-Changes.jpg

    3. Check Indexing Settings

Ensure that your posts and pages are set to index. Go to Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta and check the Robots Meta settings to ensure the Index checkbox is enabled for all relevant post types.

    4. Flush the Cache

If your sitemap appears outdated, try flushing the cache. Navigate to Rank Math SEO → Sitemap Settings, increase the value of Links Per Sitemap by one, and then save your settings. After that, go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes to apply the current settings.

    5. Exclude the Sitemap From Caching

Ensure that your sitemap is not being cached by any caching plugins. You can refer to this article on ensuring that your sitemaps are excluded from caching.

    6. Add the Correct Version of Your Sitemap to Google Search Console

Make sure you have added both the www and non-www versions of your site in Google Search Console as separate properties. This will help ensure that Google can fetch the correct version of your sitemap.

    7. Wait for Google to Fetch the Sitemap

Sometimes, it may take a while for Google to fetch the sitemap, especially if there are no significant changes on your site. If you’ve made recent changes, give it some time and check back later.

If you have followed all these steps and are still encountering issues, we recommend replying to this ticket with any additional details or errors you may be seeing, and a human agent from our support team will assist you further.

Thank you for your patience, and we hope this helps resolve your issue!

    Hello,

It appears that Google is labeling all sitemaps as “Couldn’t fetch” until they are actually read. Once the sitemap is read, the ‘Last read’ column will display the date it was last read. It usually takes a few hours or days for Google to read the submitted sitemap, so we kindly ask for your patience as you wait for the ‘Last read’ column to update.

We hope this helps. Please let us know if you have further questions or concerns.

    Thank you.

    Sorry, but it didn’t help.

    Here’s what’s happening:

When I submit the non-www version of the sitemap index:
    https://coloringpagesgalaxy.com/sitemap_index.xml
it gets accepted in Google Search Console right away.

However, the sub-sitemaps listed within (which use the www version) all return “Couldn’t fetch” errors.

On the other hand, when I try submitting the sitemap index directly using the www version:
    https://www.coloringpagesgalaxy.com/sitemap_index.xml
GSC immediately shows a “Couldn’t fetch” error for the entire sitemap. (for days now)

So something isn’t right here. Could you please take a deeper look and help me get to the root of this issue?

    Please follow the steps below:

    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

    3. Apply the following filter code to your site.

    add_filter( 'rank_math/sitemap/enable_caching', '__return_false');

Here’s how you can add filter to your WordPress site:https://rankmath.com/kb/wordpress-hooks-actions-filters/

    4. Remove all your sitemaps from your Google Search Console and re-submit only the index sitemap (https://website.com/sitemap_index.xml)

    5. If the issue persists, please try removing all your sitemaps from your GSC account again and try submitting the following: https://website.com/?sitemap=1.

Let us know how that goes. Looking forward to helping you.
