  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the "Sitemap could not be read" error in Rank Math. This can be frustrating, especially when it affects your Google Search Console reports.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

    1. Validate Your Sitemap

Make sure your sitemap is correctly configured. You can use the Validate XML Sitemap tool to check for any issues. If the validation returns a success message, your sitemap is likely set up correctly.

    2. Ensure the Sitemap is Located in the Root Folder

Your sitemap should be located in the root folder of your WordPress installation. The correct URL format should be:

    3. Check for Plugin Conflicts

Sometimes, other plugins can conflict with Rank Math. You can use the Health Check plugin to identify any potential conflicts.

    4. Review Your robots.txt File

Ensure that your robots.txt file does not block access to your sitemap. You can check this in Rank Math SEO → General Settings → robots.txt.

    5. Clear Cache

If you are using a caching plugin, try clearing the cache to see if that resolves the issue.

    6. Disable Sitemap Caching (if applicable)

If you are still having issues, you can disable sitemap caching by adding the following filter in your theme’s rank-math.php file:

    add_filter( 'rank_math/sitemap/enable_caching', '__return_false');

If you have tried these steps and are still encountering the error, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will take over and assist you further.

Thank you for raising this concern, and we hope to help you resolve it soon!

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

We can see your sitemap is currently returning a 404 error. In this case, please try to follow the steps below and see if that works for you:

    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
    https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

    3. Apply the following filter to your site to disable the transients cache for the sitemap:

    add_filter( 'rank_math/sitemap/enable_caching', '__return_false');

Here’s how you can add filter/hook to your WordPress site:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/wordpress-hooks-actions-filters/

Once done, clear your website cache, remove all the submitted sitemap, and resubmit only the /sitemap_index.xml in the Search Console.

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

ok I’ll follow the above mentioned steps & then I’ll let you know!

    Hi there

I followed the above mentioned steps but since I am not a techie person. I don’t know whether I did the right thing or not?

Also, I’d like to ask why there are so many errors in the Google search console labelled as “discovered/crawled not indexed”

Please help me in this matter.

    Hello,

Please note that the “Crawled – currently not indexed” and “Discovered – currently not indexed” messages mean that Google has found the URLs but has not yet decided whether to index them. You can follow the URLs below that explain these in detail:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/crawled-currently-not-indexed/
    https://rankmath.com/kb/discovered-currently-not-indexed/

Hope that helps and please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thank you.
