To troubleshoot the error, please follow the steps mentioned below:
1. Please check if the sitemap is working fine in your browser?
You can check that by going to domain(.)com/sitemap_index.xml
If the sitemap is working fine, please try validating it on this link: https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/validate-xml-sitemap.html
2. Once the sitemap is validated, please check if you have verified the correct version of your website on Google?
Check if you have verified the www (or non-www) and https (or http) version of your website. If there is a mismatch, please fix that.
3. Please make sure you have cleared the cache and excluded sitemap from being cached.
To do so, please follow the steps from our Knowledge Base article here:

4. Lastly, submit only the main sitemap (your-domain.com/sitemap_index.xml) to GSC. Please ensure to replace “your-domain.com” with your actual domain.
