Since the last update, I now have over 500 new sitelink searchbox hits in Google Search Console when I used to have one.
Have you decided to follow the Yoast path and populate all the pages instead of just one?

All of those must be showing up as valid inside Google Search Console.
It is about interpreting the text written in Google’s documentation. If this method was incorrect/invalid, GSC would’ve thrown errors.
With that said, we are already in talks with some Schema experts and if needed, in one of the future updates, we will change the behavior to show the Sitelinks Schema only on the homepage.
