Site Map Indexing Issue

#907280
  • Hello,

    I have an issue with the sitemap indexing in Google Search Console.

    When I look at the sitemaps in GSC, it says that the main sitemap is succesful, but the sub-sitemaps are saying “couldnt fetch”.

    See the images here: https://imgur.com/a/aof8z4c

    If you can advise how to update this it would be great!

    Thanks,
    Erik

  • Hello,

    We apologize for the issue you are facing with the sitemap indexing in Google Search Console. It seems like you’re encountering the "Couldn’t fetch" error for your sub-sitemaps, which can be frustrating.

    Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

    1. Validate Your Sitemap

    Make sure your sub-sitemaps are correctly configured. You can use the Validate XML Sitemap tool to check for any issues. Enter your sub-sitemap URL and click VALIDATE SITEMAP.

    2. Ensure the Sitemap is Located in the Root Folder

    If you manually created the sitemap, ensure it is installed in the root folder of your WordPress installation. The URL should look like this:
    https://yourdomainname.com/sitemap_index.xml

    3. Flush the Cache

    If your sitemap appears outdated, you may need to flush the sitemap cache. Go to Rank Math SEO → Sitemap Settings, increase the value of Links Per Sitemap by one, and save your settings.

    Increase links per sitemap

    Then, navigate to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes to ensure the current settings are applied.

    Flush Permalinks

    4. Exclude the Sitemap From Caching

    Ensure that your sitemaps are excluded from caching. You can refer to this knowledgebase article on ensuring that your sitemaps are excluded from caching.

    5. Add the Correct Version of Your Sitemap to Google Search Console

    Make sure you have added the correct version of your sitemap to Google Search Console. Check that there are no spaces in the sitemap URL when submitting it.

    If you continue to experience issues after following these steps, it may be necessary to wait for Google to fetch the sitemap again, as sometimes it can take time for Google to process changes.

    If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to reply to this ticket, and a human agent from our support team will assist you further.

    Thank you for raising this concern!

    Hi – I had already read your post regarding site maps and it didn’t work. There are still issues, which is why I submitted a ticket.

    Are you able to help me with the issue?

    Thank you,
    Erik

    Hello,

    From your screenshot, the last read date of your sitemap index was last September.

    Please remove/delete the sitemap index and submit it again.

    Once done, give Google some time to recrawl your sitemaps and wait for the “Last Read” date column to be updated.

    Meanwhile, please follow these steps to flush your sitemap cache:

    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:
    https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

    3. Disable the transient cache for the sitemap by applying this filter. This will make sure that your XML sitemap always reflects the latest changes on your site:

    /**
     * Filter if XML sitemap transient cache is enabled.
     *
     * @param boolean $unsigned Enable cache or not, defaults to true
     */
    add_filter( 'rank_math/sitemap/enable_caching', '__return_false');

    If you’re not sure how to add this code, you can follow this guide:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/wordpress-hooks-actions-filters/

    Looking forward to helping you.
