SEO Description with too many characters. How to fix?

    Hello,

Rank Math is informing me that I have too many characters in my SEO Description from the SEO Analysis of my site. It seems the limit is 160 characters…

But the How to Fix dropdown is NOT helpful. It doesn’t tell me how to fix the issue. And there is nowhere for me to fix the issue it seems. This is what it says:

Write a meta-description for your page. Use your target keyword(s) (in a natural way) and write with human readers in mind. Summarize the content – describe the topics your article discusses.

The description should stimulate reader interest and get them to click on the article. Think of it as a mini-advert for your content.

    Very general advice only.

So tell me how do I fix the SEO Description, exactly?

    Hello,

Thanks for contacting us and we regret the inconvenience caused.

The ideal length for a meta description is equal to or below 160 characters. Google truncates the meta description after 160 characters.

You can check this link for more information:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/ideal-meta-description-length/#what-is-the-ideal-length-for-meta-description

Please decrease your meta description length to fix the issue.

Also, could you share your website’s URL so that we can check it on our end?

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

Your answer is not helpful, as you are repeating just what the plugin says (which is already not helpful).

We know the length must be 160 characters or less.

But the question is HOW to edit the SEO Description?

WHERE do I edit the SEO Description? The Rank Math plugin does not tell me where.

    Hello,

If you are having a static page as homepage, to edit the SEO description, go to the page/post > SEO Settings > Edit Snippet > Description
    description

Here is a detailed guide for your reference:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/seo-meta-tags/#num-1-2-add-description-in-gutenberg

If the Homepage is not static, go to Rank Math > Titles & Meta > Homepage > Homepage Meta Description

Here is a guide for your reference:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/homepage-meta-title-and-description/#edit-your-titles-meta-settings

I hope this helps. Looking forward to helping you.

Hmmm, I do use a static page as the Homepage and when I check the Snippet, it is indeed very short and below 160 characters.

But somehow, Rank Math is not detecting this and instead it is using my SEO Description from my page itself (the first paragraph).

No wonder it is thinking that my SEO Description is too long…..

I have run the SEO Analysis many times already, still the same.

    Hello,

    Thank you for the follow-up.

Could you please also share your website to check? You can add it in the sensitive data section
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure, and only our support staff has access to that section.

However, I’m assuming that you are using the %excerpt% variable for your meta description. That variable will automatically get the first 160 characters on your paragraph. You cannot edit that part out in the preview section since it captures the actual content you have. If you want to edit it, you will need to edit the content itself.

Here’s a screencast for your reference:

    I hope that helps.

Thank you, and looking forward to your update.
