1). The link that you shared on the sensitive data section suggests that you may not be submitting the correct sitemap URL. Please submit the following sitemap example URL to the search console: https://domain.com/sitemap_index.xml
2). Please head over to Rank Math > Sitemap settings > General and ensure that the following options are checked:
You can also go further and create an attachment sitemap by heading over to Rank Math > Sitemap Settings > Media as shown below:

thanks for getting back to me.
I had the images included in sitemaps set to on already.
I looked into creating media sitemap as you showed but it says I need to turn off attachment redirection to parent. I did redirect a load of 404s that were jpg files which kept cropping up when I migrated my site. Do I need to disable these and create a media sitemap as you suggest?
Also one last question, when I was using the Redirection plugin before I changed to sitemap I was getting about 5 strange 404 errors a day. I redirected most of these if it was obvious. E.g. my old site had ‘topics’ and I redirected these to the relevant categories and tags. But there were some really strange things too which I ignored. Now with the Rank Math tool, I’ve only had 1 404 error in about 3 weeks. I’m hoping this is a good thing, but it would be good to get your perspective.

Please note that it is not recommended to include all the images on your site on your sitemap if they are not relevant to the main content on the page since this would cause thin content problems for your SEO.
I have checked your post sitemap and the featured images are added to the sitemap as shown below:
It is a good thing that the errors have reduced, perhaps you could share a copy of the strange once that you have received so that we can advise further.
