Hey there Rank Math staff! First off I am so impressed with the support that you offer people with a free plug-in! This is absolutely amazing. To be honest I’d pay for this kind of support!

I’m having an issue and I’m confused. Let me give you an example concerning a certain page (in sensitive data).

The example page in question shows on google search console that it is indexed, and it even says that the page is mobile-friendly. Which is great. But then if I go to live test it states the URL is not on google and says “URL will be indexed only if certain conditions are met.” and if I go to mobile-friendly test- it states “Page cannot be reached”

This is where it gets more confusing for me. Because when I type in google search bar: site:(mywebsite.com/example page in question) It indeed shows up.

This caused me then to go to robot.txt tester and see what is happening. I see in the tester that the latest robot was April 21. When I test it states “An error has occured while trying to parse the robots.txt file”

I’m wondering if this is why my pages are not being ranked high on google. They used to be and then I switched over to Rank Math. We did a lot of SEO work and got our site pretty great (as far as your plug-in shared) but we noticed that we started dropping in ranking, and our homepage is ranked far higher than specific pages, which is weird (Even though they have great SEO, backlinks, internal links, etc etc.)

I’ve tried to talk to some google support people, and they have mentioned that it could be because I’m using a CDN to deliver images? Another suggested firewalls, or blocking bots??

I’m really confused. I’ve thought about deleting the Robot.txt file from file manager, but then I’m curious how Google sees the virtual robot.txt file?? Will that solve my problems?

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH for your help. Seriously would be happy to pay for this kind of support.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today & for the kind words!

I’ve taken a look at the affected page which contains a typo btw but it has been indexed and added to the Google cache.

A CDN might affect indexing since search engines bot might not be able to access images on the CDN. If you have another static robots.txt file on your root folder then I can highly recommend that you delete it since Rank Math will generate a virtual one that is accessible from https://domain.com/robots.txt.

There does not seem to be any directives on your robots.txt file that could be blocking search engine bots and thus we can tick that off.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

whoops about the typo, but ya, you figured it out.

I’m confused a bit about virtual robots.txt files. If I delete the static file, technically typing in “mywebsite.com/robots.txt” will come from the virtual one? Is that correct?

I’ve gone ahead and deleted the static robots.txt file. Cleared Cache, purged Cloudflare CDN, cleared site ground cache, and then clicked “save” Rank Math robots.txt file.

I went back to Google Console and clicked live test for the example page. received the same message “URL not on Google” – “URL will be indexed only if certain conditions are met”

went back to robots.txt tester site. Still showing robots.txt from April 21. Clicked submit to request an update. received the following message “It didn’t go through. Try again later.”

    Thoughts?

Further update. I’ve tried clearing more caches, testing things again… same issues.

I’ve requested google re-index the example page… comes back with an error.
What am I missing here? Whats going wrong?

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hi Richard,

I do not see any issue on the URL. The fact that it is indexed means Google doesn’t really see any issue to not index the page either.

I even used this tool to crawl your website as Googlebot but I don’t see any issue there either:
    https://technicalseo.com/tools/fetch-render/

I would recommend getting in touch with Google and see what’s going on:
    https://support.google.com/websearch/thread/2536151?hl=en

Let us know how it goes.

That’s very strange to me and doesn’t make sense. Weird. Even when I request to resubmit the robots.txt file to google tester it comes back with an error.

After talking with some Google support, we have discovered that Cloudflare is what has been blocking it. As soon as I disabled it, it started working properly. Any ideas why?

    More updates…Please help.
I deactivated Cloudflare and then made a simple adjustment to the robots.txt file addding: dissallow:(sitename)/thanks

This showed up in the robots.txt tester (a first!), so for sure something is up with Cloudflare, but then when I click “see live robots.txt” it is showing the old robots.txt file. When I try to submit it gives an error.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math today.

It is not recommended to have more than a single robots.txt file. You can delete the static robots file on your root folder and add the contents on the virtual robots file via Rank Math > General Settings > Edit robots.txt file.

This sitemap will then be displayed on http://www.domain.com/robots.txt

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.
