Removing “category” from url: “strip category” option isn’t there

    Hi there,

I saw that Google started indexing my category pages like this:

    [url]/category/[name of category.

I’d like to remove the “category” part from my URLs.

According to this article you can do so thru:

Rank Math – General Settings – Links – Strip Category Base

However, I’m not seeing that option there:

    settings

So how can I get rid of “category” in my URLs instead?

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention.

Based on your screenshot, it seems that your Rank Math is not yet set to Advanced Mode. Please note that some options are only available when you enable the Advanced Mode in Rank Math. If it’s not showing, you must have chosen to use the Easy Mode upon setting up the plugin. Please follow the steps in this link to switch to Advanced Mode:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/advanced-mode/

I hope that helps. Thank you, and looking forward to your update.

Thanks Reinelle! My bad – totally forgot about the advanced / easy mode.

Unfortunately though, the functionality is not working for me:

After I hit save, this happens:

It just turns back the setting to what it was and “category” is still showing in my URLs.

    Hello,

Are you using Firefox by any chance?

Could you please try saving the settings in Chrome?

If the issue persists, we might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-security-audit-log/

We really look forward to helping you.

    I’m using Chrome.

Before giving anybody access to my site, I wonder what usually the root causes of this issue are?

I assume I’m not the only RankMath user dealing with this problem.

    Ideally, I’d fix this myself…

    Hello,

Thanks for getting back to us.

Could you please verify that you are running the latest version of the plugin? https://rankmath.com/changelog/#free

In case you are not, please update and then proceed to save the changes again.

If you are still not able to save those settings, please try doing so in another browser to exclude the possibility of being a browser bug causing this issue.

Let us know how it goes.

    Hi Miguel,

I’m using the latest version of the plugin.

I tried on Safari (instead of Chrome), and the same thing happens there. So it isn’t a browser issue.

    Hello,

    Thanks for your reply!

It seems like some other plugin/theme is conflicting with Rank Math. Would you mind doing a plugin-theme conflict test? We have a tutorial guide to help you along the way: https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/

Please let us know how that goes.

    Thanks!

    Hi Prabhat,

I’ve got no clue why, but after turning the functionality on and off again, it all of a sudden started working.

I didn’t update anything, or update the theme or any plugins.

So I’ve got no clue what the culprit was…

    Best,

    Joost
