Redirects | I/O overload

    Rank Math free

Good Morning….a serious issue to report that came to my attention over the weekend. I don’t know if this is limited to the RankMath plugin, or if it is due to an interaction between the plugin and Divi but I think it important to bring to your attention.

My client notified me that somehow the contact information on his website had been changed. While visually the email addresses appeared correct, if you clicked on the address, visitors were redirected to a different website. Also, though the phone number was displayed correctly, if you clicked on it, it would dial a completely different number. After contacting my Hosting provider, it was discovered the Rankmath plugin was responsible for these changes behind the scenes.

As you can imagine this is a serious issue, especially for a client running a tax business https://kdfs.ca/

A second issue also presented itself…I was advised that I reached the limit of my I/O cap (the site is on a shared server) it was discovered that the Rankmath plugin was responsible for this as well.

The chatter between the plugin and the database was inordinately high causing serious performance issues on the sites I am running for my client. As a result, all instances of the plugin have been removed.

Please share any comments you may have regarding this issue. Thank You (I have images to share but am unable to attach them to this message)

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math support, and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Rank Math doesn’t change any content of a website’s pages. Additionally, Rank Math is fully compatible with Divi builder.

Can you please ask your hosting provider for any proof or preferably some activity logs, that Rank Math is indeed changing the contents of your website?

As for the second issue, can you please install the plugin Query Monitor to the affected website and look for queries related to Rank Math and share it with us so we can identify the cause of the overload? You may share a screenshot of it using this handy tool https://imgbb.com/

Looking forward to helping you on this one.

As I mentioned in my initial comments…I do have proof from my hosting provider. I have shared some images using the tool you mentioned above.

They assure me my site was NOT hacked and their investigation concludes it was indeed your plugin that for reason made changes to my site. And as previously mentioned I deleted your plugin.

    Hello,

Thank you so much for providing some screenshots for us to further debug the issue.

We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.

Please do take a complete backup of your website before sharing the information with us.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-security-audit-log/

We really look forward to helping you.

    Jeremy,

Thanks for getting back to me but there’s nothing to debug at this point. As I stated I have removed the Rankmath plugin from the site. I had no choice…it was changing important contact information and redirecting users to an external website.

    NOT GOOD FOR BUSINESS

So I don’t know what else to do at this time. I can not risk reinstalling your plugin on my site. You folks will have to figure what was happening without experimenting on my client’s LIVE website.

    Michael

    Hello,

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience and we respect your decision.

The logs show the updating rules (updateMeta) but it doesn’t tell us how these rules were triggered. This update rule might be triggered when a user simply clicks on the “Update” button of the post/page as this is always the case.

With that said, allow me to share this with our developers so they can take a closer look and possibly replicate the issue.

Please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else. Thank you.

    Hello,

I just got a word from our developer.

We don’t have any code in our plugin that updates the post_content or the actual content of a post or page as all data is stored in the post meta table in the database.

In the screenshot you shared, we have seen 2 endpoints of updateMeta which only runs when the user updates the post and getFeaturedImageId which runs when a page is loaded. We use this to check the featured image in Content Analysis.

Unfortunately, we can’t do anything in this case without your website’s admin access and the steps to reproduce the issue since the issue isn’t happening on our end.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Hello,

Since we did not hear back from you for 15 days, we are assuming that you found the solution. We are closing this support ticket.

If you still need assistance or any other help, please feel free to open a new support ticket, and we will be more than happy to assist.

    Thank you.
