Could you be having any security plugins within your setup? You can check the console tab while trying to save the meta data and see if you will notice any JS errors.
If you see blocked access to this file: /wp-json/rankmath/v1/updateMeta?_locale=user – then you can whitelist the file using or use WordFence in Learning Mode.
If you’re using Cloudflare and ran into a situation where the file /wp-json/rankmath/v1/updateMeta?_locale=user is being blocked by Cloudflare Web Application Firewall (WAF), then we recommend adding a page rule in Cloudflare to disable WAF for this specific URL.

Thanks for the quick reply. While we get inded the error you mentioned we neither use a firewall in wordpress nor does the hoster. Is there a way to find out who blocked the request?

Could you please check if you have the WordFence plugin. If you are please enable the learning mode method.
The learning mode should allow WordFence firewall to no longer see the user API requests as security issues that need to be blocked, here is WordFence deeper description of the learning mode: https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/learning-mode/
Usually, this is so common on most WP sites and WordFence is known to cause the issue. Also, it may happen if you have another security plugin within your system.
If you do not have any of these then, we might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
Please do take a complete backup of your website before sharing the information with us.

I’ve checked your site and replicated the issue then got this error:

Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 ()
I tried conducting plugin and theme conflict tests by following these steps: https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/ and even with only Rank Math is enabled, the issue persists
Please consider replacing the rules in the htaccess file with the default WordPress htaccess rules, and do let us know how that goes so that we can troubleshoot the issue further.
