    Hi there,

In rank math we have the option checked on , for automatic redirects for posts.

We have a webshop with over 2300 products for each language –> so 2300 x 3 in total.

And we want to change our settings in WordPress –> settings –> permalink settings:

We want to change our product permalink structure with the following options:

    We have this : /shop/%product_cat%/

and we want to change to this: https://justpleasure.de/product/sample-product/

We already tried it before, but Rank Math doesn’t make any redirect , not even one.
Can you guys help us out, we really want to strip our permalink structure, but we are already live for over 1 year and we don’t want to loose all our SEO value of our URL’s.

I know rank math can make redirects, but how can we check its making them, how can we be sure its going to be allright?

Rank Math does give this warning, but it doesn’t make them :

Waarschuwing voor Rank Math: Het wijzigen van de permalinks op een live, geïndexeerde site kan leiden tot ernstig verlies van verkeer als dit onjuist wordt gedaan. Overweeg een nieuwe omleiding toe te voegen van de oude URL format naar de nieuwe.

    Looking forward to your reply,

    Greetings,

    Jan-Willem

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with automatic redirects in Rank Math. It sounds like you have a significant number of products and want to ensure that your SEO value is preserved while changing your permalink structure.

When you change your permalink settings in WordPress, Rank Math should ideally create automatic redirects for posts. However, it’s important to note that this feature primarily applies to posts and may not automatically cover custom post types like products or categories.

To ensure that your new permalink structure works correctly and that redirects are set up properly, you can follow these steps:

    1. Check Redirects: After changing your permalink structure, you can manually check if the redirects are working by visiting the old URLs. If they redirect to the new URLs, then Rank Math is functioning as expected.

    2. Set Up Manual Redirects: If automatic redirects are not being created for your products, you may need to set them up manually using the Rank Math redirection feature. You can do this by going to Rank Math > Redirections in your WordPress dashboard and adding the old URL format as the source and the new URL format as the target.

    3. Use a Redirection Plugin: If you find that Rank Math is not handling the redirects as needed, consider using a dedicated redirection plugin to manage your redirects more effectively.

    4. Test Your Changes: After setting up the redirects, use tools like Google Search Console to monitor any crawl errors or issues with your URLs.

    5. Backup Your Site: Before making any changes, ensure you have a complete backup of your site so you can restore it if anything goes wrong.

For more detailed guidance on setting up redirections, you can refer to our documentation on setting up redirections.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us. We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused.

Rank Math’s automatic redirect feature applies only to slug changes for posts, pages, and custom post types. However, changing the global permalink structure (such as removing /shop/%product_cat%/) does not trigger automatic redirects.

To prevent SEO loss, you will need to manually set up redirects:

    1. Use Rank Math Redirections (Rank Math > Redirections) to map old URLs to the new structure.

    2. If the change affects many URLs, consider using Regex Redirects to handle bulk redirections efficiently.

    3. Test the changes by trying to access old URLs and ensuring they correctly redirect.

Please enter the following redirection rule and see if it works for you:

    Regex Source URL: shop/(.*)
    Destination URL: /product/$1/

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.
