permalink settings + category to static page redirection option for website

Hi, I watched this video “Ultimate Guide to WordPress Permalinks (Best Link Structure)” along with your video about silos “How to Make a Silo Structure? – Step-by-Step Guide To Rank No #1”.

I am confused about some things. with the category redirect method, how should permalinks be set, to site.com/post-name or the custom setting that shows category then post name? This gets confusing trying to understand this scenario vs others like not redirecting the category to a static page yet still deciding whether to show the category name or not in the URL.

I am just setting up my site now and have a lot of articles to publish. the site will be informational and monetize with affiliate. it will likely end up with over 300 pages or more over time. I have 2 main categories as the silos with several sub-categories under each main one. This is why I am attracted to the category redirect method, to have landing pages that are hubs which link to the supporting posts in that sub-category. Yet I also know that i could choose a “flat” structure where all posts are assigned to the main category and my sub-category pages are static pages independent of the URLs of the posts but only linked to them instead.

So I have to decide which methods to use along with whether to show the category name in the URL or not regardless of the method. Also, if i choose not to show the category name in the URL, does this mean that search engines also do not see it or is this just for users? As you can see, there’s more than 1 question here. I do have a pro RM account but for some reason I ended up here which seems like the system thinks I’m a free user. anyway, Lots to ponder and thought I’d ask a human since I’ve already watched videos and read articles about these website structure options.

  • Hello,

We apologize for the confusion you’re experiencing regarding permalink settings and category redirection. It’s great to hear that you’re diving into the intricacies of WordPress permalinks and site structure!

    Permalink Structure Options

When it comes to setting up your permalinks, you have a couple of options:

    1. Post Name Only: This would look like site.com/post-name. This is a clean and straightforward option, especially for an informational site.
    2. Category and Post Name: This would look like site.com/category/post-name. This can be beneficial for SEO as it provides context about the content of the post, but it can also make URLs longer and potentially more complex.

    Category Redirect Method

If you choose to implement the category redirect method, you can set up landing pages for your categories. This means that when users visit a category URL, they can be redirected to a static page that serves as a hub for that category. This can help in organizing your content effectively, especially with multiple sub-categories.

    Flat Structure vs. Hierarchical Structure

    • Flat Structure: All posts are assigned to the main category, and sub-category pages are static pages. This can simplify your URL structure but may require more navigation effort for users.
    • Hierarchical Structure: Using categories and sub-categories in your URLs can help with organization and SEO, as it gives search engines context about your content.

    Visibility to Search Engines

If you choose not to show the category name in the URL, search engines will still index your content based on the post name and other factors like meta tags and content relevance. However, having the category in the URL can provide additional context that may help with SEO.

    Recommendations

Given that you plan to have a large number of articles and want to monetize through affiliate links, consider the following:

    • Use a clear and concise permalink structure that reflects your content hierarchy.
    • If you opt for category-based URLs, ensure that your categories are well-defined and relevant to your content.
    • Think about user experience; a clean URL structure can enhance usability.

    Hello,

Thank you so much for getting in touch.

You have a solid understanding of silo structures, and your decision depends on how you want to organize your content for both users and search engines. Please refer to the points below:

    – If using category redirects with landing pages, you can set permalinks to %postname% (site.com/post-name) for a cleaner URL. If you prefer including categories, use %category%/%postname% (site.com/category/post-name).

    – This works well for siloing, as category pages act as content hubs. A flat structure (without categories in URLs) is also viable if you internally link well.

    – If omitted, search engines still recognize the category from your site’s structure and internal linking. It’s mainly a user-facing choice.

As for your issue with your Rank Math PRO feature, it seems like you purchased the plugin with some other email address.

Can you please search and forward a receipt from FastSpring.com so we can locate your account?

    Looking forward to helping you.
