    Dear Support,

Based on a SEO analysis my website could rank better with different keywords but I’m struggling to understand which is the best approach to affect SEO the least possible.

The scenario is the following: my website shows only the base category in the url such as:

    https://adozionianimali.com/annunci/miki-6-mesi-taglia-piccola/
“annunci” is a main category, then post name

I would like to perform 2 actions to improve the website structure and also accomodate some SEO, such as:

    https://adozionianimali.com/annunci-animali/cani-in-regalo/miki-6-mesi-taglia-piccola/

Annunci is the main category changed to “annunci-animali” plus the sub-category “cani-in-regalo” and the post name.

    So my questions are:

    – Is there a way to get this result without affect too much SEO rankings?
    – If so, do you have guidelines and/or best practices to follow?

I hope to being clear, in case I’m not please use test credentials if you want/need to take a deeper look.

Thanks in advance for your help,
    Marco

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting the support.

We do not recommend changing the permalink structure on a live website, especially if the pages have already been indexed/ranking as this could negatively affect that. Here’s a guide that you can have a look at for a quick reference: https://www.searchenginejournal.com/changing-url-structure/325249/

However, if you want to go ahead, assuming you’ll follow this approach site-wide and not specifically for the mentioned URL, you can use Regex expressions in our Redirections module to create a redirection for this so that the traffic on your website is redirected to correct URLs: https://rankmath.com/kb/how-to-use-regex-redirects/

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you.

    Hello Prabhat,

Thanks for your help and sorry for the late reply.

I forgot to let you know that my permalink setup now is /%postname%/ . If I add the category in the structure urls that already exists will looks like:

    https://adozionianimali.com/annunci/cani-in-adozione/postname/

By doing this, it will affect SEO in the same way you explained in your previous reply?

Thank you so much for sharing your advices.

    Hello,

Yes, any modification to an indexed/ranking URL can negatively affect the rankings.

When you change the URL of a page that is already ranking, Google and the users have to go through a redirection in-between to reach the destination page. In these cases, Google needs to reindex the new URL and that can affect the rankings.

    Hope this clarifies things further.

    Thank you.
