Open Graph Image Compression Issue on Social Media

#943646
  • Hello Rank Math Team,

I’m reaching out because I’m experiencing an issue with Open Graph images shared on social media. When I publish an article on WordPress, the image displayed on social media appears compressed and of much lower quality than the original one I upload to the site. I’ve attached a screenshot to show you the difference between the image on my site and the one on social media.

The images I use are in PNG-24 format and have a higher resolution than what’s required by both social media platforms and the Rank Math plugin. Despite this, something seems to be compressing them during the process, leading to visible quality loss.

I’ve already checked WordPress settings and ruled out other potential causes, but I can’t resolve the issue. That’s why I’m reaching out to you, as I believe you are the best ones to help me, given your expertise with Rank Math.

I would appreciate any advice or guidance on how to resolve this issue.

Thank you in advance for your support!
Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Best regards,
    Benito VItariello

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the Open Graph images appearing compressed on social media. It can be frustrating when the quality of your images is not as expected.

Here are a few things you can check to help resolve this issue:

    1. Image Format and Dimensions: While you mentioned that your images are in PNG-24 format, it’s important to note that Facebook officially supports JPEG, PNG, and GIF formats for Open Graph images. Although Rank Math supports WebP, ensure that your images meet the recommended dimensions of 1200px X 630px. If the dimensions are too small or too large, social networks may not display them correctly.

    2. Gzip Compression: If you have gzip compression enabled in your caching plugin (like W3 Total Cache), it may interfere with how Facebook detects Open Graph tags. Try disabling gzip compression by going to WordPress Dashboard → Performance → Browser Cache → HTTP (gzip) compression and then clear your website and server cache.

      Disable HTTP (gzip) compression

    3. Check Open Graph Tags: Ensure that the og:image tag is correctly set in the source code of your page. If the tag is pushed down due to excessive inline CSS from minification, Facebook may not find it. You can check this by viewing the page source and looking for the og:image tag within the first 60 KB of the source code.

Check if OpenGraph tags are pushed towards the end of source code

    4. Testing with Facebook Debugger: After making changes, use the Facebook Sharing Debugger to scrape your page again. This will refresh Facebook’s cache for your page and may resolve any issues with image display.

Scrape again in Facebook sharing debugger

If you’ve checked all these aspects and the issue persists, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from our support team will take over and assist you further.

Thank you for bringing this concern to our attention! We look forward to helping you resolve it soon.

I tried modifying the image by creating a JPEG version with a 1200×630 resolution, and I also cleared the cache using both the caching plugin and manually. However, the result hasn’t changed: the image on social media still appears compressed and of lower quality than the original.

I look forward to your feedback and hope you can help me resolve the issue.

Thank you in advance for your support!

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

The compression of Open Graph images on social media is usually controlled by the platforms themselves, like Facebook or Twitter, and not by Rank Math. These platforms often compress images to optimize loading times.

We can confirm Facebook uses this image https://www.jeerflo.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/ar1-1024×581.png, but might render it smaller on their platform. See the following screenshot of our test on https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/

Some way around this might be to use higher-quality images with the recommended dimensions of 1200×630 pixels. Ensure the image is under 5MB, as larger files are more likely to be compressed.

Don’t hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.
