og:description not working properly

Pinterest uses the open graph title and description, but I can’t set the description manually in my WordPress posts. It keeps using the excerpt rather my own description which is a copy of the meta-description. Even when I manually add the description to the post in the Social Media Options > Facebook > Description, it keeps ignoring that description, and keeps using the excerpt.
I’m at my wits end trying to get this working.
My site’s URL is below. You can check any post. The og:description is the first lines (excerpt) from the post, every time. It should be the same as the meta-description.
    Thanks

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the og:description not working properly. It sounds frustrating when the settings do not reflect as expected.

To address this, please ensure that you have set the Open Graph description correctly in the Rank Math settings. Here’s a quick guide:

    1. Edit the Post: Go to the post where you want to set the Open Graph description.
    2. Rank Math Meta Box: In the Rank Math meta box, navigate to the Social tab.
    3. Facebook Section: In the Facebook section, make sure to enter your desired description in the Description field.
    4. Save Changes: After entering your description, ensure you save or update the post.

If you have already done this and it still defaults to using the excerpt, it might be due to a conflict or a setting that needs adjustment. You can also check if there are any caching plugins that might be affecting how changes are reflected on your site.

For further assistance, we recommend replying to this ticket with your site’s URL so that a human agent from our support team can take a closer look at your specific setup and help resolve this issue effectively.

Thank you for raising this concern, and we appreciate your patience as we work to assist you!

I had already done what the Support Bot suggested above, even though I had already done that previously.
I’ve tried adding %seo_description% in RankMath Titles & Meta > Posts,
and I’ve tried manually copying the meta description into the Facebook description, but no change.
Ideally, og:description would automatically use the meta description.
    Thanks

    Hello,

Thank you for your query and we are so sorry about the trouble this must have caused.

We can’t seem to reproduce this issue from our end. It works pefectly fine when we try to add an explicit description to a post’s social meta.

We might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WordPress & FTP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section. Also, please share the affected post’s URLs.

Please do take a complete backup of your website before sharing the information with us.

    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

We really look forward to helping you.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

The login URL you have shared is no longer working.

If it has already expired, please extend the validity for 1 week and share the link again in the sensitive data section so we can investigate this issue further.

    Looking forward to helping you.

Hey Reinelle, thanks for getting back to me. Actually, I have some good news.

Last night, I was getting frustrated with this issue and started to dig into the possibility of another plugin being the cause of this problem.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t know the outcome until this morning (UTC -10). It’s just five minutes ago that I discovered that everything is working as it should.

The culprit was ‘Easy Social Share Buttons for WordPress’. Deep in the bowels of the settings there was a box to tick about letting it control og descriptions. After unchecking that box, clearing caches, and sleeping on it, I was happily surprised to see that everything is working as it should now.

Thanks to you and Jeremy. Cheers, guys!

    Hello,

We’re glad to hear you were able to identify the conflict and that everything is now working as expected.

If you ever need further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out.
