How I can find and fix “outgoing internal links contain nofollow attribute” please?
-
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out about finding and fixing outgoing internal links that contain the nofollow attribute. To address this issue, you can follow these steps:
-
Identify Outgoing Internal Links with Nofollow Attribute:
- Go to your WordPress Editor.
- Select the anchor text of the link that you suspect has the nofollow attribute.
- Click on the link icon and enter the link.
- Click on the Edit icon and then select the Advanced option.
- Choose the Set to nofollow link option and save the changes.
-
Review Global Settings in Rank Math:
- Check your Rank Math settings under Rank Math SEO → General Settings → Links.
- Ensure that the Nofollow External Links option is configured correctly.
- You can also add specific domains to be nofollowed under Nofollow Domains if needed.
-
Avoid Nofollowing Internal Links:
- It’s generally not recommended to add the nofollow attribute to internal links as it can prevent crawlers from indexing those pages, impacting your search rankings negatively.

Using Rank Math’s ‘Quick Actions’ Admin Menu ItemI audited the site in Smerush and there is a large number of “outgoing internal links contain nofollow attribute”. how I can fix these please?
Hello,
Thank you for your patience.
Rank Math does not add the nofollow to your internal links as we only add it to your external:
https://rankmath.com/kb/should-you-nofollow-external-links/However, the nofollow attribute could be added by one of your plugins or active theme.
Assuming you are using the latest version of all the plugins and the themes (please update if not yet), to determine that, please follow this troubleshooting guide:

Only the site admin would know and your users won’t be affected by this troubleshooting.
Hope that helps.

As requested, I provided you with the requested info in the sensitive data section. Please do investigate this issue across the site.
Elementor team have checked it from their end and they were unable to identify the issue, and they suggested to contact Rank Math as it is nothing to do with them.Hello,
Please confirm where you are seeing the error. You can share some screenshots using a tool like https://imgur.com/.
Looking forward to helping you.
It happens on most pages, but do check some pages on the website (most of the pages have links). It has been reported by Semrush that there are “1,142 outgoing internal links contain nofollow attribute”. See this screenshot: https://imgur.com/a/jaa5LvF
Hello,
Thank you for sharing your website login with us. We have investigated this and the issue is not coming from the Rank Math plugin. We temporarily deactivated the Rank Math plugin and the nofollow attribute was still on the URLs.
We traced the nofollow links to be appearing on the “Most Loved Items” products column, which was created in Elementor. We’d advise reaching out to Elementor again and letting them know the nofollow links are appearing in that product container – and are still showing while Rank Math is deactivated.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation
Can you please share with me a screenshot of the “Most Loved Items” you stated.
Also, was the 1148 “nofllow links” are all from the “Most Loved Items” ?Hello,
