Multilingual Sitemap Issues

    Hi,

I understand that Rankmath deals with the HREFLANG tags so it doesn’t isolate the different languages in the sitemap. But within our Google Search Console – we’re basically seeing all of our multi-lingual content being marked as discovered but non-indexed.

We’re using translatepress and translating to several other languages, and being a news site we need all of our multilingual content to be indexed.

    The site is piit.co.uk

Any help here would be amazing,

    Kind regards,
    Jamie

  • Hello,

Thanks for contacting us, and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

I checked your site and it seems you’ve multiple lang_code for the same URL that can be the reason behind of this issue, since the other alternate URLs are being identified as duplicate URLs and as a result, Google might identify them as Same URL with multiple lang_code.

Hence, please try removing the other alternate tags from your site (en-GB, fr-FR, de-DE, it-IT, es-ES) and then Validate Fix those issues on Search Console to see if that fixes the issue for you.

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Hey Sakib,

Thanks for getting back to me so fast!
Apologies if I’m not fully understanding

Currently in Translatepress we have the following setup:
    Translatepress

But URLs should be translated within sub folders:

    https://piit.co.uk/the-best-mushroom-supplements-for-your-mental-health/
    https://piit.co.uk/fr/les-meilleurs-supplements-de-champignons-pour-votre-sante-mentale/
    https://piit.co.uk/de/die-besten-pilz-erganzungen-fur-die-geistige-gesundheit/
    https://piit.co.uk/it/i-migliori-integratori-di-funghi-per-la-tua-salute-mentale/

    etc.

So this shouldn’t be causing duplicate URL issues?

    Kind regards

    Hello,

TranslatePress adds extra region-independent hreflang tags, along with region-dependent. They point to the same page.

When you don’t have any region to specify, TranslatePress most likely adding duplicate hreflang for the same country lang code by default. Such as: both de and de-DE.

A similar issue I found on wordpress.org support forum: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/hreflang-error-2/

Not sure, but the following URLs seems to be useful in this case:
    https://translatepress.com/docs/settings/advanced-settings/#removehreflang
    https://translatepress.com/docs/developers/change-hreflang-localization/

However, It is suggested to get in touch with TranslatePress support in order to get proper solution on this issue.

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

Hey, I’ve removed those – would you be able to check from your side again?

    Hello,

Yes, I checked them and it seems to be validating fine now. Please try validating fix on GSC or use URL Inspection Tool for a particular URL to see if that works for you now.

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

Hi – Any update? It’s been nearly a week

    Hi,

We’ve got another issue relating the same thing. It seems that RankMath is breaking the Translatepress functionality (I believe it relates to the category stripping?)

    Here’s the issue we’re facing:
On the live site, if you change the language and go to one of the main categories in the navigation bar you get the ‘Sorry this page isn’t available’ in whatever language you’re in.

For this test we’re jumping to French, and selecting the 4th Navigation item (which is Wellness)
And you get this page: https://piit.co.uk/fr/bien-etre/
    Which is broken.

    For testing:
We’ve spun up a staging site here (please ignore the broken SSL): https://dev.piit.co.uk/

If you do the exact same thing – go to French and click on the 4th Navigation item you go to this page:
    https://dev.piit.co.uk/fr/categorie/bien-etre/
    And it works.

The only difference on the dev version of the site is that Rankmath has the ‘strip category base’ feature disabled. But in an ideal world – we would have this enabled, especially as our site is already fully indexed with it removed, so adding it back would change all the pre-existing URLs.

Any help would be massive helpful.
    kind regards

    Hello,

    Apologies for the delay.

This ticket seems to have been stuck in our drafts section for some reason.

Since TranslatePress doesn’t support removing the category base, we don’t have any option in our plugin to force the translation plugin to use the short permalinks.

In this case, you will have to keep the Remove Category Base option disabled to make the categories work in the secondary language. You may create the redirection so the link juice is passed from the source to the destination URL with time once the search engine bots realize that it is a redirection.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Hello,

Since we did not hear back from you for 15 days, we are assuming that you found the solution. We are closing this support ticket.

If you still need assistance or any other help, please feel free to open a new support ticket, and we will be more than happy to assist.

    Thank you.
