The Post Excerpt variable %excerpt_only% will show the excerpt of the current post without any auto-generation. So if your current post does not have an excerpt, then %excerpt_only% will not return any value.
Replace the %excerpt_only% variable with %excerpt% and check the meta descriptions on your pages.

Thanks for your response. I did replace the %excert_only% with the %excerpt% variable and it is now generating the meta descriptions. Thanks very much.
I also get this error message in Google Seach Console regarding Amp pages explaining why the Amp pages are invalid:
“The parent tag of the tag “picture” must be “nonscript”.
“The parent tag of the tag “image” must be “i-amphtml-sizer-intrinsic”.
Do you know why this is happening and how I can resolve it. I get this message a lot for the Amp pages. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Moreover, I would suggest getting in touch with the dev team of the AMP plugin you’re using as they are in a better position to assist you with these errors.
