Meta Description Showing Wrong

    Hi There,

Currently this issue is only affecting one page. If you view /alcohol-abuse/withdrawal-detox inside WordPress you’ll see:

Title: Understanding Alcohol Withdrawal: Symptoms & Detox Process
Meta: Alcohol withdrawal can be deadly if detox is not handled by medical professionals. Learn the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and alcohol detox.

    However, in Google you’ll see:

Title: Understanding Alcohol Withdrawal: Symptoms & Detox Process
Meta: What is Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS)?; What is Delirium Tremens (DT)?; What is Alcohol Detox? Can I detox from alcohol at home?

As you can see, Google is pulling the correct title, but is pulling from our list for the meta. I’m not sure why it’s only on this page and why the title is correct, but the meta isn’t.

Also, apologies if this isn’t the right section for this.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

I’ve checked your site and that particular page, I can see that you’ve set the meta title & description properly.

Additionally, I’ve checked that page on heymeta.com and you can see here is the description was showing up correctly.

    Please see screenshot below:
    ss-1

Since all of your settings matches and showing correctly,
You would need to check if Google has seen the changes already or not.

For that, please check when the Google cache was updated for that page:
    a. cache
    b. cached

If the cache date is from before adding the new meta description, then you just have to wait for Google to re-crawl and re-index the page with the new info. If the date is after you made the changes, then you just have to wait it out and there is no further input needed from your end.

Do note that if everything’s fine and Google still decides to show a different meta title/description for your search keyword, there is nothing you can do as Google sometimes ignores the custom meta info altogether and show something from the page’s content that matches the search intent better.

Here are some of the common reasons Google might not use the meta description you provided:
The meta description is not relevant or useful (ie, just a collection of keywords).
The exact same meta description is provided across a large number of pages.
The meta description doesn’t match what the user is searching for, but other content on the page does.

There is a whole article dedicated to this on SearchEngineJournal:
    https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-offers-suggestions-for-avoiding-meta-description-rewrites/359884/

Here is an example showing Google changes title depending on the keyword used:
    description
    &
    description 2

The best you can do is optimize your meta tags to try and match the intent of the search/keyword.

Hope that helps. If you have any further question(s), please let us know.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

This was incredibly detailed! Thank you.

Looks like Google is auto selecting a new meta. I didn’t even know this was a thing until you mentioned it. Thank you for doing more than just: “you did it correct on our end, so I’m not sure what’s happening.”

I was a yoast user for years and decided to take the risk of switching to RankMath. I have since made it the recommended SEO tool for 3 other sites I do content for. THIS type of customer support is just one of the MANY reasons I’ll keep recommending it. Thank you!
