Hello,
We apologize for the issue you are facing with your focus keyword not being recognized in the URL structure. To ensure that your focus keyword "m&a" is correctly added to the URL, you should follow these steps:
- Edit the Post/Page: Go to the post or page where you want to add the focus keyword.
- Access the Snippet Editor: In the Rank Math meta box, find the Snippet Editor section.
- Edit the URL: Manually edit the URL to include your focus keyword. Since special characters like
& can cause issues in URLs, it’s best to use a hyphen or another acceptable character. For example, you could use m-a or m-and-a instead of m&a.
- Save Changes: After editing the URL, make sure to save your changes.
Here’s an example of how to add the focus keyword in the URL:

Once you have updated the URL, Rank Math should automatically detect it and show a green tick if everything is set correctly.
If you continue to experience issues, please reply to this ticket, and a human agent from the Rank Math Support team will assist you further. Thank you for raising this concern!

This is the auto answer which I tried already
Hello,
Thank you for your query and we are so sorry about the trouble this must have caused.
It may not be a good idea to use & in the URL, because WordPress automatically skips the ASCII character set. URLs often contain characters outside the ASCII set, therefore the URL has to be converted into a valid ASCII format.
When using unsafe ASCII characters you have to replace them with a “&” to properly show the amphersand in the URL.
See the official table here with all character encodings.
Using the code to show the ampersand in the URL will still fail the test because it should match the exact keyword.
Please stay advised that these tests are just guidelines and one does not need to follow them religiously.
At the end of the day, the content needs to be written for the readers and not for the search engines.
Scoring higher points in Rank Math’s tests won’t guarantee higher rankings.
Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need my assistance with anything else.
Hi
What would you recommend instead?
Should I use “ma” or “m-a” or “m_a” ?
Thanks
Hello,
In this case, you should ignore the focus keyword presence in the URL test.
Google should be able to determine the & even if our plugin doesn’t recognize it in the focus keyword field or URL. Google is smart enough to determine the keyword you are using in your content.
Looking forward to helping you.
