Hello,
We apologize for the issue you are facing with the "Couldn’t fetch" error in Google Search Console. This error can occur for a few reasons, and we recommend following these troubleshooting steps to resolve it:
1. Rename the Sitemap File
Try changing the name of your sitemap file. In Google Search Console, navigate to Indexing → Sitemaps, paste your sitemap URL (`https://rankmath.com/kb/couldnt-fetch-error-google-search-console/) in the Add a new sitemap field, and click SUBMIT.
2. Fix Sitemap Issues
- Validate Your Sitemap: Use the Validate XML Sitemap tool to check if your sitemap is correctly configured. If there are no issues detected, you should see a success message.
- Ensure the Sitemap is Located in the Root Folder: Make sure your sitemap is located at `https://rankmath.com/kb/couldnt-fetch-error-google-search-console/ with only one forward slash between your domain name and sitemap path.
- Ensure Your Posts Are Set to Index: Check that your posts are set to index by going to Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta and enabling the Index checkbox in the Robots Meta settings.
- Flush the Cache: Increase the value of the Links Per Sitemap by one in Rank Math SEO → Sitemap Settings, then save changes. After that, go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes to flush permalinks.
- Exclude the Sitemap From Caching: Ensure that your sitemap is not being cached. You can refer to this knowledgebase article on ensuring that your sitemaps are excluded from caching.
3. Add the Correct Version of Your Sitemap to Google Search Console
Make sure you have added the correct variation of your site URL in Google Search Console. You can check this in your WordPress dashboard under Settings → General.
If you have followed all these steps and are still encountering the "Couldn’t fetch" error, it may be that Google has not yet fetched your sitemap. In this case, you may need to wait for Google to do so.
We hope these steps help you resolve the issue. If you continue to experience problems or have any other questions, please feel free to reply to this ticket, and a human agent from our support team will assist you further.
