Are you directly copy/pasting the markdown content into the WordPress Editor?
If so, are you using the Gutenberg?
I am asking because you can’t directly copy/paste Markdown code into the Classic Editor and I just tested directly pasting the Markdown code into the Gutenberg and internal/external links are being detected fine.
Can you please send us the Markdown code you are using and tell us how you are importing it?
