Issue with Category Keywords

    Hi,

I have an issue when I am trying to optimize my site categories. The setting for categories is “%title% | %sitename%” which should be fine. Only, the system gives me always the same %title% for ALL categories I am editing. Even if the category I am working on has a completely different title.

For example, in case of my site, it always gives me the category “Playa del Carmen”. Even when I am trying to edit another category, as “Cancun”. Therefore I cannot get the keyword for the category right. And the snippets look odd, as all of them are titled “Playa del Carmen”, and the description would go on with text about “Cancun” in this example.

I have not been able to get that right and wanted to ask your for any hint?
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Kind regards

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting the support and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

Assuming you are using the latest version of all the plugins and the themes (please update if not yet), it would seem like a conflict with one of the plugins or the theme you are using.

To determine that, please follow this troubleshooting guide:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/

Please let us know if you find the culprit.

Only the site admin would know and your users won’t be affected by this troubleshooting.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Hi Michael,

txs for your quick reply. I followed your instructions, but did not find the solution.

All my updates are actualized, I am doing that on a daily basis. I also have the Health Check plugin installed. When I switch to the trouble shooting mode, all plugins are inactive, with exception of the Health Check. I also activated RankMath to be able to find the problem.

The issue is, with all other plugins being inactive, the error on the categories still remains. The theme is also not the problem, as the error also appears when using Twenty Twenty theme.

How can I proceed to get this solved? Sorry no idea about how to check WP setup. Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Kind regards

    Hello,

In that case, I think we might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please edit the first post on this ticket and include your WP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
    Sensitive Data Section

It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/

You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-security-audit-log/

We really look forward to helping you.

    Hello,

I have updated the sensitive data as requested. Can you please check further?

    Thank you.

    Hello,

Since you want to display in the category, the category name, you could try replacing %title% with %term%, as I show you in the screencast I added in the Sensitive Data section. Could you check it?

    Looking forward to help you.

    Hi Alberto,

thank you so much for your hint.** Now I can edit the category tags without any problems. Can I adjust the settings somewhere in order to get this proposed by the system as default setting?

Anyway, I just found out that in the settings it got imported as %category%|%sitename%, but in the category snippet it appears as %title%|%sitename%. But even if I change the settings to %term%|%sitename%, the issue in the categories is there after saving the change and I have to edit manually. Did I do something wrong when importing the data from former All in One SEO?

Another thing I realized is in the advanced settings of the categories, when it comes to canonical URLs. The system proposes as default what I added in the sensitive data. :O That would give a lovely 404 lol. 😉 Can this be adjusted in the settings to get a working default canonical URL and avoid manual editing?

Txs so much for your great support.

    Kind regards

    Hi guys,

can you please have a look on the URLs in my category snippets? I am editing the categories by hand according to Alberto’s instructions. But even when I manually overwrite the canonical URL for a category, it does not arrive in the snippet. Can’t get rid of those 404s as shown in the sensitive data. Any hints on how to resolve?

Txs a lot in advance for your help.

    Hello,

After checking it, I saw you had your permalinks with a really weird structure (even if after that, the website displays them fine), it could be an indicator of an issue in the site.

To determine that, please follow this troubleshooting guide:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/check-plugin-conflicts/

Please let us know if you find the culprit.

Only the site admin would know and your users won’t be affected by this troubleshooting.

    Looking forward to helping you.

    Hi,

txs for the hint. I just ran a trouble shooting, and I think I have found the culprit.

With only Health Check and Rank Math being active, the canonical URLs look fine. As soon as I activate Polylang, I see the odd “double” version as stated in the sensitive data.

Now… on my multilingual site, Polylang is kind of key. Do I only see the odd versionof the snippet on my screen, or will it really appear like this in the snippet for Google search? If so, do you have any suggestions for me?

Txs in advance for your help, stay safe.

    Hello Karin,

I’d suggest that you get in touch with Polylang support and share with them this issue. Let us know how it goes.

Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

    Hello,

Yes, I think it will be the best solution. Do you want we to close this thread? We will be here for any other questions or issues you might have in the future.

    Looking forward to help you.

Hi and txs a lot. I have checked but unfortunately I will not get any support from Polylang at the moment. As my blog is on the start, budget ist tight… still on the free plan that does not include any help. Can you recommend any plugin for multilingual sites that does not have conflicts with Rank Math? Txs in advance for any hint.

    Hello,

Well, WPML is another multilingual plugin and it is fully compatible with Rank Math (in a recent update we announce the full compatibility with the plugin).

    Looking forward to help you.

Txs for the hint, I will check that one!
