Hello, i figured something out and i want you to clarify it to me.
i have about 750 existing pages that i want to noindex and remove from google. now i set the category which is mydomain.com/showcases/…. into noindex on the general set up. however, on individual pages below the edit area, the box index is check (this setting was imported from yoast -so it has always been index). Tell me should i worry not about opening individual pages and noindexing each? in my opinion, i thought, once the noindex tag is set at the general settings, it will rather check the box noindex.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

The option to set the robots meta in Rank Math > Titles & Meta only apply as default robots for your new pages. If your category pages are originally set as index, the default will not be applied to them.

However, Rank Math PRO has an option to update them at once using the bulk edit feature.

Here’s a link for more information:

    I hope that helps.

Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us anytime if you need further assistance with anything else.

Thanks for replying. do you mean that setting a noindex tag on the dashboard (general settings) for example yourdomain.com/showcases will not apply to individual pages under showcase? like.. yourdomain.com/showcases/item1, yourdomain.com/showcases/item2….,?

Because in my case, i have set a noindex on the rankmath general settings to apply to the category but i still see index box checked on individual pages under “showcases”.
so im asking, do i still need to go through individual pages to uncheck “index” and check the box “noindex”? or the global tag (note: not the overall global tag -site wide) set for that category “showcases” will overide all the existing index meta tag on each of the pages under the showcases.

your recommendation, i mean the link you sent, cant work now as im on rank math free version. but i still need a way around this

    Hello,

Yes, the global robots meta settings are applied only to new posts and not to the older ones.

Also, setting a category to noindex would not apply to the noindex tag to all the posts/pages within that category. This is because there are many cases where archive pages are kept as noindex but the posts within those archives aren’t.

Here either you can set the pages to noindex individually or you can follow this guide to noindex the pages within a category using a filter: https://rankmath.com/kb/how-to-noindex-all-posts-in-a-category/

    Hope this helps.

    Thank you.
