When I have [year] in the h1, does it show in the meta title or not? Because if it does then adding %currentyear% will mean that the year will show twice on the meta title?

Thank you for contacting Rank Math support today and bringing your concern to our attention.
Assuming your H1 is also your post’s title if your meta title contains the %title% variable, then Rank Math will copy the contents from H1, displaying two texts of the year since you are also using the %currentyear% variable.
In addition, Rank Math’s meta doesn’t read the shortcode so it will simply display “[year]” to the meat.
