How to index products in one category and not in others

    Hi,

I would like to ask you the following question to see if with Rank Math I can achieve what I need.

I am creating a website for a client where the products have two levels, category and subcategory.

For example, the product “Bestway Inflatable Pools” is in the category “Swimming Pools” and also in the subcategory “Inflatable Pools”.

The product “Bestway Inflatable Pools” is displayed on the category page “Swimming Pools” but I don’t want the product to be indexed in this category, but I want it to be indexed in the category “Inflatable Pools”.

I want to do it this way so that I don’t duplicate the product twice in different categories and only index it in one category.

I hope I have explained myself well.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks,

    Mike.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math for help with indexing your product page. It’s not clear what you are asking but I will do my best to address your concerns. From what you have described, there is nothing you need to do.

Index meta tags can only be applied to pages as a whole, not parts of a page. The product “Bestway Inflatable Pools” has its own index meta value which is set to “index”, while each of the category pages has their own index meta values which are usually set “noindex” by default. If you hadn’t already, you may need to set the category pages “index”.

You can check the index status of each category page by going to the category > SEO settings > Advanced Tab > Check index checkbox. https://rankmath.com/kb/advanced-tab/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have questions.

    Hi Nigel,

    Thanks for your quick reply.
I don’t think I have explained myself quite correctly.
I have some products that are displayed on two pages at the same time and I would like those products to be indexed on one of the pages and on the other page I don’t want the products to be indexed but I need the page to be indexed in Google.

Do you think this could be done?

    Thanks.

    Hello,

Assuming you do not want the page to be “listed” in the category archive “Swimming Pools” but to be listed in the sub-category archive, unfortunately, we do not have such a feature.

However, a page listed on two archive pages would not result in the page getting indexed twice on the SERPs. Google would index it only once depending upon its canonical URL.

With that said, if you still wish to exclude the page from the archive, please get in touch with your theme support as they output the archives and might be able to exclude the desired page from the specific archive.

    Hope that helps.

    Thank you.
