Hierarchical structure of CPT for SEO

    Hi RankMath,

We are using ACF Pro to create custom post types. We currently have a WordPress page with ‘About Us’ and a CPT with Team. What I would like to achieve is to create the URL structure /about-us/team/single-team-member. To make sure this works SEO wise, I can set the following things up in ACF:
    — In the URL’s I can rewrite the Permalink to /about-us/team. I can also set the Archive to be /about-us/team. This makes sure that the CPT Archive falls under the About Us wordpress page.
    — How does this affect my SEO (if in any way?) and does RankMath picks this up correctly? I know that the sitemap will be divided for the CPT and not for the URL structure, but I was wondering if this would be the best set-up.

    Kind regards,
    Joost

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing. Setting up a hierarchical structure for your Custom Post Types (CPT) can indeed have a positive impact on your SEO, especially when it comes to URL structure and user experience.

SEO Benefits of Your Proposed Structure

    1. Clear Hierarchy: The URL structure /about-us/team/single-team-member clearly indicates the relationship between the pages, which helps both users and search engines understand the content better.
    2. Keyword Relevance: Including relevant keywords in your URLs can improve your chances of ranking higher in search results. In this case, having "about-us" and "team" in the URL is beneficial.
    3. Improved User Experience: A well-structured URL is easier for users to read and remember, which can lead to lower bounce rates and higher engagement.

    Rank Math Compatibility

Rank Math is designed to work seamlessly with custom post types and their permalinks. As long as you set up your permalinks correctly in ACF and ensure that they are reflected in your WordPress settings, Rank Math should pick this up without any issues.

    Sitemaps

You are correct that Rank Math will generate separate sitemaps for your CPTs. This is standard behavior and helps search engines index your content more effectively. The hierarchical structure you are implementing will not negatively affect how Rank Math handles your sitemap.

    Recommendations

    • Ensure that you have set the correct permalink structure in both ACF and WordPress settings.
    • Use Rank Math’s features to optimize each CPT for SEO, including setting focus keywords, meta descriptions, and more.
    • Regularly check your sitemap to ensure that all URLs are being indexed correctly.

If you need further assistance with the setup or want to ensure everything is configured correctly according to the latest SEO standards, we recommend considering our professional setup service. This service requires a PRO subscription and can help ensure your plugin setup is fully optimized.

    Hi Princess,

I think the answer of the bot was enough. What I was wondering if it’s the best practice to overwrite the URL slug in ACF Pro and not link them directly to the page and if that would do anything for the hierarchical structure Google requires.

    Kind regards,
    Joost

    Hello,

Since your “About-Us” is a WordPress page, then they won’t be hierarchical as the CPT from ACF is from a different post type.

Rank Math will not be able to pick that up automatically in that case, but you can achieve that by customizing the breadcrumbs schema and its output using this filter:

    Looking forward to helping you.
