Help Required: Unable to Remove “Product Category” from URL in Rank Math

    Hi
I’m currently facing an issue with my WordPress website where I’m trying to remove “product-category” from the category URLs using Rank Math, but it’s not working as expected.

After removing the category base in the Rank Math settings, all category URLs started giving 404 errors. I then attempted to fix this with the Redirection module by adding the following rule:

    Source URL (Regex): ^product-category/(.*)

    Destination URL: /$1

    Redirection Type: 301 Permanent Move

Unfortunately, the redirects still aren’t working and the URLs continue to show 404 errors. I also tried with the leading slash (^/product-category/(.*)) but the problem persists.

Could you kindly guide me on how to properly fix this issue? Is there something I might be missing in Rank Math’s redirection settings, or do I need to handle this differently (e.g., via .htaccess)?

Your help would mean a lot, as I’m looking to make my URLs clean and SEO-friendly without the “product-category” base.

Thank you so much for your time and support.

    Best regards,
    Sadia M

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with removing the "product-category" from your URLs in Rank Math. Thank you for providing detailed information about the steps you’ve taken so far.

To properly remove the category base and avoid 404 errors, please follow these steps:

    1. Enable the Strip Category Base Option: Make sure you have enabled the Strip Category Base option in Rank Math. You can find this setting by navigating to Rank Math SEO → General Settings → Links. This will help in removing the category base from your URLs.
      Strip Category Base

    2. Check for Conflicting Plugins: Sometimes, other plugins can interfere with URL structures and redirections. Ensure that there are no other SEO or redirection plugins that might be conflicting with Rank Math.

    3. Clear Cache: If you are using a caching plugin, clear your cache after making changes to ensure that the new settings take effect.

    4. Redirection Settings: Since you are already using the Redirection module, ensure that your redirection rules are set correctly. The rule you provided seems correct, but make sure there are no other conflicting rules that might be causing issues.

    5. Test Redirects: After setting everything up, test your redirects using a tool like Redirect Checker to see if they are functioning as expected.

If you continue to experience issues after following these steps, it may be beneficial to consider our professional setup service, which ensures that your plugin setup is fully correct and adheres to the latest SEO standards. You can find more information about this service at Rank Math Services.
