The ”Unable to retrieve sitemap” error is, in most cases, simply due to a bug in the Google Search Console. Here’s what to do if you encounter this on your website:

Once done, please remove all the sitemaps you have submitted in your Google Search Console and resubmit your main sitemap only /sitemap_index.xml then give Google some time to recrawl your website.

I followed the steps but I have a problem on the verification of the 4 variants of the sitemap (httpstatus.io). I have a 508 error, when I check a second time I have other errors (503 for example)

If you’re getting those errors on your sitemap using the tool, you may need to get in touch with your web host to fix it for you. They are in a better position to help you with this kind of issue.
Once done, ensure that only 1 version of the sitemap is working (200 Ok status), and the rest are redirecting to it.
