Google indexing 404s and 301s

Bought a new domain, and this domain came with previous backlinks linked to other gaming websites and random websites.

The issue is when I submitted a sitemap to Google, Google is indexing all the (now) 404 errors & 301 redirects in the XML sitemap and I’m not sure how to fix this.

How do I find an “ID” of a WordPress URL if it doesn’t exist anymore, so I can place it in the exclusion tab in the sitemap section of RankMath?

    Please help, thank you!

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for the delay and for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

If your sitemap still includes those 404 and redirected pages, it seems that your sitemap is getting heavily cached.

Please follow these steps for initial troubleshooting:

    1. Ensure you’re using the latest version of your plugins/theme including the Rank Math plugin.

    2. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast:

    3. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

You can also share your website URL so we can check.

    I hope that helps.

    Thank you.

I did steps 1 and 2 & I actually tried doing step 3 the other day, but it’s telling me .htaccess file not found.

    Hello,

Could you please also share the 404 and 301 URLs you are referring to that are still being indexed? I’ve tried checking some of your URLs, but they are opening fine.

However, your robots.txt includes sitemap links which are not in your current sitemap. Please remove the first 2 sitemap lines in your robots.txt. Here’s a link on how to edit your robots.txt:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/how-to-edit-robots-txt-with-rank-math/

Once done, please try removing all your submitted sitemaps in your Google Search Console account then resubmit your main sitemap only.

Once done, give Google some time to recrawl your site.

    I hope that helps.

    Thank you.
