Google Error: Tag ‘link rel=canonical’ appears more than once in the document

I’ve been getting this error in Google Search Console under the AMP section:

The tag ‘link rel=canonical’ appears more than once in the document.

This started on Nov 26th, shortly after I installed rankmath on the site. The site has been using AMP for well over 2 years without error. The Search Console says 1,350 pages are affected by it (which is almost the entire site).

I checked a few individual pages in the wordpress post editor to see if a canonical url had been manually added to the post, but that was not the case.

I’m not sure what the problem is, please let me know how to fix this. Thanks in advance.

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for the delay and for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

Could you please check if your AMP plugin is already adding the Canonical tag to your AMPs? Please disable the AMP option from Rank Math at WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > Dashboard, then clear your cache and test your AMP URL with google amp test:
    https://search.google.com/test/amp?

If you confirm the canonical being added by your AMP plugin, please get in touch with your AMP plugin provider and ask them how to disable the canonical tag from your AMP plugin for showing in the source code.

I hope that helps. Thank you, and looking forward to your update.

    Hello,

As a follow-up on this issue, I wanted to ask which AMP plugin are you using?

If you are using the AMP for WP plugin, please choose Rank Math from the dropdown at WordPress Dashboard > AMP > Settings > SEO.

If you are using any other AMP plugin, please enable the Rank Math AMP module at WordPress Dashboard > Rank Math > Dashboard

Then, clear your website cache along with the AMP cache. Click on the “Validate Fix” in your Google Search Console and wait 4-5 days for Google to see the fixed AMPs and remove the errors from your search console.

Hope that helps and please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else.
