google can’t index pages on site due to incorrect “no-index” tag

    Hi guys,

I have a HUGE problem with a client website that is using Rank Math – the site is not being indexed by Google because somehow the pages are shown as “no-index” and limited by a ”
Excluded by ‘noindex’ tag” according to Google Search Console.

We have verified this by doing a simple search in Google and ALL our client web pages for their domain name have dissappeared from results…

I’ve checked the pages and the settings in Rank Math and “no-index” is not set but it is appearing in the header that Google reads.

    Can you help ASAP please?

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

I checked the page source of the website you shared with us and you are correct in saying that there’s no “Noindex” robots tag present.

However, when I analyze this site through the Rank Math Free SEO analysis tool, I see that there’s a noindex tag present.

Upon further investigation, I find out the root cause of this issue is in the HTTP response header. There’s an X-Robots-Tag present which has been given a directive of noindex.

You can read this tutorial to learn about how to modify the HTTP response header:

    https://rankmath.com/kb/edit-htaccess/

Be careful when editing the htaccess file, it is easy to make mistakes and break your site. If that happens, you can restore the file to its state before the last edit by replacing the htaccess file with the backup copy created by Rank Math in the same directory (.htaccess_back_xxxxxx) using an FTP client.

Hope that answers your question. Please feel free to contact us again if you need further assistance.

Thanks Azib but how did that get there?

    Hello,

That is set up as a rule in your .htaccess file:

    Header set X-Robots-Tag "noindex, nofollow"

Hope this helps solve your issues.

Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any other questions.
