German Umlaut in URL / filenames

#33391
  • This is about: Focus Keyword not found in the URL
    When using German Umlaut Characters.

    German Umlaut Ä,Ö,Ü and the special character ß in HTML are encoded as:
    Character HTML Entity HTML Unicode call
    ä ä #228;
    Ä Ä #196;
    ö ö #246;
    Ö Ö #214;
    ü ü #252;
    Ü Ü #220;
    ß ß #223;

    So in german we would not use the special Umlaut Characters in URLs (even filenames)

    Instead we use:
    Ä/ä = ae
    Ö/ö = oe
    Ü/ü = ue
    ß = ss or sz

    Example:
    The focus keyword is “Küche in Bali” then I would use the URL “kueche-in-bali”

    Previously I used Yoast SEO Pro, which did recognized this special characters.

  • Hello,

    Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.

    I have just tested this on my end but I could not reproduce any issues with detecting the focus keyword on the URL as shown below:
    Screenshot

    It is likely that the issue has something to do with your database encoding. Could you please test this out on a different site and check if you can still reproduce it?

    Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

    ÅÄÖ in Swedish is also not detected in the URL. It get automaticly changed from…
    Å / Ä = A
    Ö = O

    Hi Kenny,

    That is normal but it should be detected by Rank Math.

    We will be taking a closer look.

    With that said, the score is there only for your reference anyway and doesn’t affect your actual rankings. Treat it only as a to-do list, nothing more. Don’t try to live by it and don’t follow the tests religiously.

    I know, i’m just helping you making the plugin better 🙂 Good plugin btw. I was using yoast but i see no real need for it any longer.

    Hi Kenny,

    Thank you for the feedback.

    We will dig deeper into this and get back to you 🙂

    Sure, it’s just a “nice to have”
