Currently, Rank Math uses the Short Description as a fallback when no Meta Description is set. However, if you have created a template for your meta description and it is not reflecting in the admin preview box, this behavior is expected as the preview box may still show the Short Description until the page is saved or updated with the new meta description.
To ensure that your template is applied correctly:
- Make sure you have saved your changes after setting up the meta description template.
- Check if there are any caching plugins that might be affecting how changes are displayed in the admin area.
- If you continue to see the Short Description in the preview box, it may be worth checking if there are any conflicts with other plugins or themes.

No issues with caching and there should not be any conflicts with other plugins. I can’t see any JS errors in console in both front and backend. Should the code be modified?
I checked today as well, and the frontend code looks good. But the backend preview is still from the Short Description box. Any suggestions?

That is the exact behavior of the code/filter since it runs on the frontend only.
You will still see the incorrect value from the preview/metabaxo, but the correct description is added to the page’s source code directly, which search engines see.

Unfortunately, the behavior on the preview cannot be changed further, as it is also our default priority for generating the description:

Yes I understand that it is the default, but is there any way to override it and get the preview to e.g. output the excerpt from the main description?

Sorry, but the generation of the preview information is hardcoded to the plugin. It can’t be overridden by any other means at the moment unless we change it in the plugin core files, which is currently not an immediate plan.
