Hello,
Before explaining our issue, we’re letting you guys know that following RankMath’s upgrade (Dec. 18), we had to log back into the RankMath site. We kept getting error messages preventing us from finalizing the connection. We then reloaded the page and were suddenly logged in.
From what we’ve seen in this forum, others have run into the same issue.
Now, our *current issue*:
Following the upgrade, RankMath no longer recognizes keywords – or rather, keyphrases – in posts when, in code view, some of the keywords appear between tags – e.g., “XYZ letters”; it’ll recognize “XYZ” and “letters” as separate entities, not as *one keyphrase*.
That wasn’t an issue until now (except, for some mysterious reason, in headers).
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.
We made a few changes in the plugin in the most recent update 1.0.36 that requires the user to log out and then back to their Rank Math account. You can read about all the changes here:
https://rankmath.com/changelog/Could you please let me know if you are still experiencing this problem in version 1.0.36.1 which has addressed some update bugs?
Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

We did manage to log in once we refreshed the RankMath login page. That was just a FYI bit.
We were actually asking about another issue. Here’s what we wrote:
Following the upgrade, RankMath no longer recognizes keywords – or rather, keyphrases – in posts when, in code view, some of the keywords appear between tags – e.g., “XYZ letters”; it’ll recognize “XYZ” [in italics] and “letters” [normal font] as separate entities, not as *one keyphrase*.
That wasn’t an issue until now (except, for some mysterious reason, in headers).
NOTE: We have installed the latest version, which came out today. The problem remains unresolved.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hi,
I am so sorry but can you please give me the steps to replicate?
It is working fine on all of our test installations.
We look forward to hearing back from you.
Perhaps I wasn’t clear. Here it goes again:
Sample keyphrase IN THE PLUGIN:
Novel Jane Eyre
(all in normal font; it’s impossible to add keywords in italics).
Sample keyphrase as found IN THE POST/TEXT itself:
Novel Jane Eyre
(“Novel” is in normal font; “Jane Eyre” is in italics).
Prior to the update, “Novel Jane Eyre,” despite the italics/normal font mix, was recognized as *one keyphrase*.
Following the upgrade, the plugin tells us that “Novel Jane Eyre” is *not* found in the text – even though it *is* in the text about 5 times.
I should note that even before the upgrade, the italics/normal font mix in keyphrases was a problem, but *only* when they were inserted in subheadings (h2, h3, etc.). The plugin failed to recognized them.
Since the upgrade, the italics/normal font mix in keyphrases is not recognized *AT ALL anywhere in the post*.
In your reply, you say “it is working fine” in your test installations.
Do you mean you can have keyphrases featuring words that, *in the text itself*, are found *in italics AND in normal font*, and these are still recognized by the plugin?
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Rank Math and sorry for any inconvenience that might have been caused due to that.
I have been able to reproduce this problem on my end. Most of the tests are able to detect this keyword but only one test seems to be affected as shown below:
I have raised this problem with our dev team and we will be digging deeper into this issue and then get back to you.
Looking forward to helping you. Thank you.

Hello,
Can you please update to 1.0.36.3 and see if the issue is fone for you?
If that doesn’t work, we might need to take a closer look at the settings. Please include your WP logins in the designated Sensitive Data section.
It is completely secure and only our support staff has access to that section. If you want, you can use the below plugin to generate a temporary login URL to your website and share that with us instead:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/temporary-login-without-password/You can use the above plugin in conjunction with the WP Security Audit Log to monitor what changes our staff might make on your website (if any):

Hello,
Unfortunately, the problem remains.
The normal/italics font mix found in the text is *not* recognized in the following “categories”:
Focus Keyword doesn’t appear in the content.
Focus Keyword not found in subheading(s) like H2, H3, H4,
Keyword Density is 0.00 which is low, the Focus Keyword and combination appears 0 times.
We have *not* changed any settings following the update(s). It was working before; now it’s not.
Sorry, but wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing login information or granting access to our admin panel.
We understand you may be unable to help us without that access. If so, just please keep in mind that at least some installations are having trouble with RankMath’s analysis of keyphrases seen in more than one font in the text – and hopefully you’ll be able to have the issue fixed in a future update.
Thank you.

NOTE: The issue here is clearly that RankMath is analyzing the post’s SEO using *Code View* – in other words, “novel Jane Eyre” (normal font/italics mix in the text) is being processed as:
“novel < em > Jane Eyre < /em >”
That’s why the mixed-font keyphrase is not getting recognized as such. The “< em >” tags are getting in the way.

Hello,
That is most definitely not the case. Please check this screencast I created:
https://i.rankmath.com/c8MiNgAs you can see, the focus keyword is being recognized even though it is in italic.
That has to be something else. Would you like us to take a closer look? We will need your WP logins for that.
Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to test the issue.
But, as explained in my previous comments, the focus keyword is:
“novel Jane Eyre”
not “Jane Eyre” by itself, as found in your screencast.
It’s the *normal font/italics mix* (as found in the text itself) that’s causing the trouble.
Enter “novel Jane Eyre” in the Focus Keyword slot and you should be able to replicate the problem.
Just make sure you have – *in the text itself* – “novel” in normal font and “Jane Eyre” in italics.
As explained in my other comments (see further above), that is a *new* problem. This was *not* a problem before the upgrade a few days ago.
(NOTE: That issue existed *only* in subheadings; in other words, RankMath couldn’t find the normal font/italics mix in subheadings in the text.)
Once again, that’s why the keyphrase problem seems to be that RankMath is analyzing the post’s SEO using *Code View* – in other words, “novel Jane Eyre” (normal font/italics mix in the text) is being processed as:
“novel < em > Jane Eyre < /em >”
That’s why the mixed-font keyphrase is not getting recognized as such. The initial “< em >” tag (splitting “novel” from “Jane”) is getting in the way.
NOTE: RankMath does recognize the normal font/italics mix in one instance:
Focus Keyword appears in the first 10% of the content.
But not in these three instances:
Focus Keyword doesn’t appear in the content.
Focus Keyword not found in subheading(s) like H2, H3, H4, etc..
Keyword Density is 0.00 which is low, the Focus Keyword and combination appears 0 times.

Hello,
You are absolutely right.
Seems like we cannot read the focus keyword if there is an HTML code within the focus keyword.
I have reported this to the dev. team and it seems like this is happening in the Gutenberg update.
Please do not hesitate to let us know if you need our assistance with anything else in the meantime.
Thank you.
Hopefully the problem will be taken care of in the next update.
And despite this issue, yours has been a really helpful plugin.
Hi,
Yes, we will take care of this in an upcoming update.
I am so glad to hear that you like the plugin 🙂
