Featured post on sidebar not showing excerpt

Hi, my understanding is that the excerpt for a post will be pulled from the meta description. That’s why I have been religiously filling out the individual snippet using Rank Math.

However, after updating the core version of WordPress to 6.5.3, I noticed that excerpts are no longer showing on the posts selected to be featured on the sidebar. This problem appears to only affect new posts that are being created. Older posts are still able to pull and show the excerpts.

This is puzzling because, if I understand it correctly, when the “Excerpt” field (which is optional) is left blank, WordPress automatically generates the excerpt.

Here’s an image of a filled out meta description: https://imgur.com/maRQcYp

Here’s the empty Excerpt field: https://imgur.com/0xMk2sk

So, if this post is published and selected to be featured on the sidebar, there will be no excerpt. This isn’t the way it worked previously.

Are there some Rank Math settings that I need to fiddle with to get things back in order?

  • Hello,

I apologize for the inconvenience you are facing with the excerpts not showing on the posts selected to be featured on the sidebar after updating WordPress to version 6.5.3.

Based on the information you provided, it seems that the issue might be related to how WordPress handles excerpts and meta descriptions. WordPress generates excerpts automatically only if the "Excerpt" field is left blank, as you mentioned.

To ensure that the excerpts are displayed correctly on the sidebar for new posts, you can follow these steps:

    1. Check if the "Excerpt" metabox is enabled in the post editing screen. If it’s not visible, you can enable it by clicking on Screen Options at the top of the post editing screen and then checking the Excerpt option.

    2. Verify that the Rank Math settings are correctly configured to use the meta description for generating excerpts. You can navigate to Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta and check the settings related to meta descriptions.

If you have already checked these settings and the issue persists, please provide more details or screenshots of your Rank Math settings related to meta descriptions so that we can assist you further in resolving this issue.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and we appreciate your patience as we work to resolve this matter for you.

    Hello,

To clarify this issue, the %excerpt% variable in Rank Math only generates the post excerpt (from your screenshot) and returns the first 160 characters from your content if that field is empty.

The description field in Rank Math only reflects the data from your content or the excerpt field.

If that field is automatically generating an excerpt, then one of your plugins or active theme is doing that.

    Looking forward to helping you.
